It's no secret that Wimbledon fortnight is underway.
That of course means pristine tennis whites, strawberries and cream - and grunting.
And according to new research from academics at the University of Sussex, if you listen carefully to that grunting, you can tell who's going to win - and who's going to lose.
Doctoral researcher and university tennis team captain Jordan Raine, together with mammal communication experts Professor David Reby and Dr Kasia Pisanski, analysed television footage of 50 matches featuring some of the world’s top 30 tennis players.
They measured grunts made by the players during serves, backhand and forehand shots, and recorded at what stage of each match the grunts were produced, as well as whether the players won or lost the match.
While the pitch of grunts increased as matches progressed, the study found that the likely match outcome for a player may become apparent from the outset.
Quote MessageThis suggests that this shift in pitch is not due to short-term changes in scoreboard dominance, but instead, may reflect longer term physiological or psychological factors that may manifest even before the match. These factors could include previous encounters, form, world ranking, fatigue, and injuries.”

The university says that when competitive tennis players were played short clips of other players’ grunts they were able to identify which of two grunt sequences produced by the same player came from a match that the player lost.
This suggests, says the researchers, that tennis grunts may provide useful information for competitors "regarding a player’s internal state during a match".

Image source, Sussex PolicePolice are trying to trace a 16-year-old girl who hasn't been seen for nearly a week.
Daria Pietrzak was last seen at her home in St Michael's Road, Worthing, on the evening of Wednesday 28 June.
She is believed to have left at some time between 01:00 BST and 08:00 BST the following day, when she was reported missing.
Daria has links to London and it's thought she may have travelled to the capital. She has connections to the Acton, Ealing and Shepherds Bush areas.

A 91-year-old woman has died in a car crash on the A26 in East Sussex.
She was travelling in a convertible VW which came off the road and hit a tree at Heron's Ghyll between Uckfield and Crowborough.
The driver, a 68-year-old woman from Rodmell, near Lewes, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries.
Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, particularly the driver of a tanker which was travelling through the area at the time.

Police investigating an arson attack on the La Tana restaurant in Ladies Mile Road, Patcham in Brighton on 18 June, have released this CCTV as investigations continue.
A nine-year-old football fan has recreated the home of his favourite club in Lego.
Joe, who lives in Crawley, decided to build a tribute to Portman Road, home of Ipswich Town FC, using about 8,000 bricks.
Dad Phil Bryant's own love affair with the club started in the late '70s during the Bobby Robson era.
"Both my kids follow Ipswich now - I have ruined their lives," he said.
It took Joe about five hours, across a couple of days, to complete the model.
