    Police are investigating after a referee was assaulted during a football match in Kent.

    It happened at Hollingbourne recreation playing fields off Greenway Court Road at about 16:15 BST on Saturday 16 September.

    The referee, a man in his 50s, was taken by South East Coast Ambulance Service to hospital.

    He was knocked unconscious and suffered injuries to his face.

    A 28-year-old man from Maidstone was arrested on Wednesday 4 October on suspicion of assault and was released pending further investigation.

    A cat was shot more than eight times in a suspected group air rifle assault in Birling, near West Malling.

    KC was attacked from different directions and the pellets had entered his head, torso and hip.

    Eight bullets were found inside him but more bullets hit the feline, passed through his body and came out the other side.

    Despite his injuries KC survived and is currently stable and on four weeks of bed rest.

    Owner Jacqui Gill said the culprits "just left him for dead".

    KC was shot during the evening of Tuesday 26 September and the morning of Wednesday 27 September.

    The RSPCA is appealing for witnesses to come forward and the owners are offering a reward for information which will see the offenders in court.

    The number of recorded crimes of modern day slavery in Kent and Essex has tripled in a year, according to Kent Police.

    The force says it recorded 179 cases last year, and has serious concerns for trafficked children who vanish from council care.

    Officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said children as young as 11 - especially girls - are given to traffickers or directly to families living in the UK by desperate parents who believe it will provide a stepping stone to a better life.

    But they are often badly treated, regularly beaten and in some cases sexually abused.

    Coombe Valley Road was closed while the vehicle was removed.
