  19. Fishermen blockade closes Calais portpublished at 09:01 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

The port of Calais has been closed because of a blockade by French fishermen halting ferry crossings from Dover.

The strike action started this morning when a group of fishing boats blocked the French port.

It means all ship movements into or out of Calais have been temporarily suspended meaning long delays for anyone planning to travel from Dover.

In one tweet, ferry company P&O say disruption could continue until 12:00 GMT.

A scheme called 'Dover Tap' is in place on the A20 to cope with the build-up of lorries heading to the port.

    Quote Message

It is utterly unacceptable that a small number of individuals have been allowed to bring to a standstill a port on which thousands of businesses and tourists rely every day. We call on the French authorities to ensure that the blockade is cleared without further delay and that Calais reopens for business. In the meantime I would like to apologise to every one of our customers and assure them that our dedicated employees will be doing everything they possibly can to help them complete their journeys as soon as possible."

Janette Bell, Chief Executive, P&O Ferries
