  19. NHS organisations to be combinedpublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2018

Eight NHS bodies responsible for planning and commissioning healthcare in the county are to be combined into a single group, Kent County Council has announced.

All eight clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) across Kent and Medway, which are made up of GPs, nurses and secondary care consultants, are set to form a consolidated organisation.

CCGs are in charge of buying enough resources for planned hospital treatment as well as urgent, emergency and rehabilitation care.

They also cover community health as well as mental health and learning disabilities services.

The eight groups in the county cover Ashford, Canterbury, Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley, Medway, South East Kent Coast, Swale, Thanet and West Kent.

Speaking on behalf of council leader Paul Carter, Cllr Peter Oakford shared the plans with the health reform and public health cabinet committee on Wednesday 24 January.

Following the brief update, Cllr Ken Pugh said: “I understand that there is some dissent and not all CCGs have signed up for this model and that [if this goes ahead] the local CCGs would still be in existence but in a different form.”

However Cllr Oakford told councillors that the legislation at national level has not been changed so the groups would have to remain but their work would be consolidated into one group.

He added that there is one CCG that has not signed up but more details will be shared during the next meeting.

KCC are due to debate the proposal at their next health reform and public health cabinet committee meeting on 13 March.
