Councillors are continuing to debate Medway Council’s budget.

The council leader Alan Jarrett has managed to please one set of the protesters by putting down an amendment.

He’s conveniently found £1.7m, and out of it £17,500 will be given in grant funding to the Royal Voluntary Service Centre in Chatham, keeping it going for an extra six months.

In the amendment, the rest of the money, if passed by councillors, would be spent on highways, festivals and free parking at Christmas.

COuncillors gather for annual budget council

A 6% council tax rise and savings of £12m have been agreed by Brighton and Hove City Council.

Once increases to precepts for police and fire services are taken into account, that means an extra £101.28 for the average B and D household.

With rising demand for council services, and less grant funding from Whitehall, £12m savings were needed to balance the budget.

  11. Protestors urge Medway councillors to save servicespublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2018

    Rajdeep Sandhu
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio Kent

Not one but two sets of protestors greeted councillors tonight arriving at this year’s budget setting meeting.

What’s made people so angry? It is the closure of a golf course, Deangate Ridge, and the closure of a day centre for elderly people, the Royal Voluntary Service Centre in Chatham. It’s the result of a council looking at ways to save money in the continued challenging financial picture.

The meeting has only just begun and debating the budget won’t come until later this evening. First there’s talk of the what the council’s future vision should be and its capital investments.

Campaigners sitting in the public gallery behind me will be hoping hints from council leader Alan Jarrett to rethink the decision to stop funding to the Royal Voluntary Service in Chatham will be acted upon.
