A cigar butt once smoked by Sir Winston Churchill is expected to fetch up to £700 when it is auctioned later this month.

The former prime minister was renowned for his love of cigars and is said to have smoked about 10 a day, though never more than half way down.

The cigar butt was originally given to a police officer who would regularly patrol Churchill's country home near Westerham, in Kent.

His son, Mike Wood, from Belper in Derbyshire, owns the item.

He said his father Bill was a member of the fast-response team which would frequently check that all was well at Chartwell.

"During one of those trips, someone in the house gave my father the cigar butt which had been smoked by Winston himself.”

He said his father was so proud of the cigar that he stored it carefully in a small plastic bag.

It will be auctioned at Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire on 27 March.

  2. Drug-driving on the increasepublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

    Stuart Maisner
    BBC Live reporter

The number of people caught driving under the influence of drugs in Kent has risen by nearly 40%, with around 300 motorists detected last year.

Road-side testing kits were brought in three years ago to detect drugs including cannabis and cocaine.

But road safety charities say better kits are needed to find more drugs.

The Department for Transport estimates 200 people are killed every year through so-called drug driving.

  9. Decision deferred on Jools Holland’s ‘noisy neighbours’published at 18:57 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Jools Holland

Councillors on the licencing committee at Medway Council have been hearing both sides of a noise dispute.

Not just any dispute, musician and TV presenter Jools Holland is complaining about Cooling Castle Barn, a wedding venue next to his home. It’s also where he had his own wedding lunch in 2005.

Mr Holland wasn’t there but both sides had "lawyered up" and there were moments when it felt more like a court room than a stuffy council room with temperamental microphones.

There were more than 20 audio recordings which were played to the meeting. They had been made outside the Hollands' property and included renditions of wedding classics such as Frank Sinatra’s Beyond the Sea.

After five hours of evidence and questions, the decision was made to not make a decision.

Instead councilllors want more time and will decide on recommendations to limit the use of the outdoor space after 23:00 within five days.

  13. Surrey County Council leadership bidpublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    Jack Fiehn
    Political reporter

The leader of Surrey County Council is facing a challenge from one of his fellow Conservative councillors.

David Hodge has been in charge for almost seven years.

Now the councillor for Cranleigh and Ewhurst - Dr Andrew Povey - says he intends to stand against him at the annual general meeting of the Conservative group on Friday, claiming there is a need for fresh thinking.

Mr Hodge became the leader of Surrey County Council in October 2011, replacing Andrew Povey who had stepped down the month before, amidst weeks of confusion and political infighting.

The local authority is facing a financial shortfall of £100m and is having to use its reserves as well as increasing council tax by 6% and make savings of £66m.
