A drive has been launched to recruit 1,000 extra border staff "to improve the quality of our border and prepare specifically for Brexit," Home Secretary Amber Rudd has said.
The Hastings MP told the Commons Home Affairs Committee it was a reversal on previous plans to reduce staffing numbers.
"Previous staffing requirements for the Home Office from the 2015 settlement were for staffing numbers to go down, so we are now making sure that we are moving away from that and having, contrary to that going down, 1,000 coming in," she said.
The Home Office later said the majority of the new recruits were likely to be replacing officers who retire or change job, rather than strengthening border checks.
The BBC has been told about 250 of the 1,000 officers will be in the South East - 200 at Dover and Folkestone, 35 to 40 at Gatwick and 13 at Newhaven.
