Seventeen prolific callers to Kent's emergency services could be costing half a million pounds, Kent Police has said.

The group - who are thought to suffer from mental health difficulties - account for thousands of calls to 999 and 101, the chief executive of the Kent Police and Crime Commission (PCC) has said.

Speaking at a Kent Community Safety Partnership meeting, Adrian Harper estimated the callers were costing up to £500,000.

Mr Harper said dealing with calls from people with mental illness is "probably the biggest challenge" to emergency services.

He spoke of plans to recruit a community and mental health team to act as a "diversion" when necessary.

"The whole point will be about early intervention and giving these people the appropriate support," he said.
