  11. STI rates average in Medwaypublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Dean Kilpatrick
    Local Democracy Reporter

Medway "enjoys relatively good sexual health" despite having a higher rate of herpes than the national average, according to an annual report.

According to Medway Council's director of public health James Williams, prevalence of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) is currently at 66.6 per 100,000 people - compared to the England average of 57.2.

The report, discussed this week, also revealed there were 1,979 new STI diagnoses in 2016, with chlamydia being the most common.

As expected, 58% of the total number were among those aged 15-24. Mr Williams' report reads: "Medway residents enjoy relatively good sexual health, with lower rates of STIs than the England average in 2016.

"There is (a) strong positive relationship between deprivation and STI rates, with central Chatham having highest concentration of STI diagnoses and higher HIV prevalence than most affluent or rural areas."

Rates of gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV were lower than the national average.

  14. Funding to cut suicides "thinly spread"published at 09:17 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    Dean Kilpatrick
    Local Democracy Reporter

Government funding allocated to help reduce the number of suicides in Kent and Medway is "thinly spread," a councillor has warned.

Nearly £700,000 will be spent on suicide prevention work across the county in 2018/19, following a successful bid for Department of Health and Social Care money.

The grant will be used on projects including promoting a 24/7 freephone support line, training over 1,000 people to spot "suicide warning signs", and improving support for families bereaved by someone taking their own life.

Conservative councillor Stuart Tranter says he feels the Kent and Medway Sustainability and Transformation Partnership is trying to achieve too much with the money available.

He told the health and wellbeing board meeting on 3 July: "This funding [report] doesn't have any numbers in it in terms of what's going on in which category.

"I'm not saying you could necessarily answer that very easily, but it would have been useful to know.

"I wouldn't sit here as an amateur and second guess the rationale, but looking at it from the outside it looks thinly spread rather than more focused. It's a lot of money, but in a way it's not."

Between 2010 and 2017, there were 176 suicides in Medway - while the three-year suicide rate in both Kent and Medway is above the national average.

There is a national target to reduce suicide by 10% by 2021, with central government providing money to eight health trusts across the country.
