Chants of “Harry, Harry, Harry” rang out among the vast crowd that turned out to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.

After chatting to members of the public, the royal couple were greeted at the Pavilion entrance by pupils from Queen’s Park School.

  16. How Bognor became royalpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

King George V and Queen Mary

The Sussex resort earned its royal suffix thanks to a visit by Harry's great-great grandfather George V.

But ironically it was he who is credited with uttering the most famous insult against the town - "bugger Bognor".

How this came about, or even if it did, is debatable, but there are two versions of the story.

One has it that he uttered the phrase when initially approached about the town's request for the "Regis" suffix.

The other states that on his deathbed it was put to him he should return to the town to get better. His contempt for this advice resulted in the angry outburst.
