    Problems hit hospital telephone lines

Problems with hospital telephone lines saw ambulances diverted away from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton earlier.

South East Coast Ambulance Trust (Secamb) said low priority patients were taken to other hospitals, but crews continued to take seriously ill and paediatric patients to Brighton, as well as those with major trauma.

Services have started to return to normal, Secamb said.

A statement on the hospital's website said IT issues had affected telephone lines.

It said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust has not yet commented further to the BBC.

Raiders who used an unusual route to try to break into a cash machine at Burgess Hill station fled empty-handed after failing to get into it.

They targeted the ATM from the back of the machine, inside the station, but British Transport Police said nothing was stolen.

They want to hear from anyone with information about the attempted break-in, which happened at about 02:30 GMT on Friday.

Morning commuters had to use the station's side entrance as BTP and Sussex Police officers continued their investigations at the main entrance.

Police say no significant damage has been found so far.

Libraries could see opening hours cut as part of changes to free service as Kent County Council (KCC) looks to save about £1m.

However, KCC says no libraries are set to be closed and there are options to open their doors for longer hours.

Conservative councillor Jeremy Kite said: "They provide so much more than just book lending."

Liberal Democrat councillor Trudy Dean said libraries were under threat due to rising rents on the high street.

Portslade Bowls Club has agreed to move from its site in Victoria Road to the park opposite, giving Brighton and Hove City Council space to build 45 new homes.

In return for moving, the club will get a new artificial turf bowling rink in Victoria Park, as well as a modern sports pavilion.

Councillors were assured that the bowls club would be relocated before any building work started. Proposals will be subject to planning permission.

A power station with a block of communal student-style digs for key workers and university graduates has been refused planning permission.

The application for the 17-storey building in Woking had been submitted by Thamesway Group - a development company set up by Woking Borough Council.

Councillors went against the advice of officers and experts saying they could not "morally" or "ethically" support the tower block with "suffocating" rooms.

They voted against the application for Poole Road based on mass and bulk concerns, parking problems and design issues.

Four voted to refuse the application with three voting against refusal.

A former animal rendering facility which once housed cattle infected with mad cow disease is set to become a residential development of up to 20 homes.

Outline planning permission for the scheme to convert Thruxted Mill in Godmersham, Kent, was granted by Ashford Borough Council councillors last night despite concerns the site is "heavily contaminated".

Local resident Dr Geoff Meaden said: "Even during the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) crisis, local people reported piles of animal carcasses were regularly seen to be lying around the yard having been dumped there by unsupervised lorry drivers.

"My concern over BSE and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease [CJD, human form of BSE] still exists as the prime agents are almost indestructible, can be be spread in a number of ways, and can lay dormant for many years.

"If planning permission was allowed, the borough council needs to demonstrate with complete authority that the site can be made 100% safe for residential usage," he said.

Committee members - bar one - backed the proposal on the basis the site is properly disinfected, and fully certified as not being a danger to the public by an "accredited agency" before work commences.

Thruxted Mill has been vacant for more than 10 years.

  17. Four arrests over 'biker brawl'published at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2018

Four men have been arrested in connection with a brawl at a social club that left six people with serious injuries.

An armed group of 13 men descended on the Forman Institute in Blindley Heath, near East Grinstead, on 7 November, in what police believe may have been a feud between biker gangs.

The men - aged 34, 38, 40 and 44 - have been arrested on suspicion of assault causing GBH, conspiracy to commit GBH and violent disorder.

A 40-year-old man, from Manor Park, Slough, has been charged in relation to the attack.

  18. More support for vulnerable people in 'out of town' housingpublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2018

    Sarah Booker-Lewis
    Local Democracy Reporter

Extra support is to be provided for vulnerable people living in towns surrounding Brighton after a spate of deaths at an emergency housing unit in Newhaven.

A review is under way to assess what more should be done for homeless people from Brighton and Hove who are living in Kendal Court, where five people died this summer.

Due to a lack of housing in Brighton, the council places people in small Sussex towns, leading to concerns that they are isolated.

Brighton and Hove City Council met on Wednesday to consider a "sobering" report into Kendal Court.

Julia Greenslade told the meeting that her friend died at the flats on 3 August.

When his family went to remove his possessions, they found bin bags full of dirty clothes, she said.

"This suggests a lack of hygiene and dignity for my friend.

"There is no launderette in Newhaven at all now. There is nowhere for people to go."

Councillors were told that more support would be in place by January with two welfare workers and a full-time social worker starting in mid-December.

A total of 12 people have died in the council's emergency accommodation in the past two years and 19 died in temporary accommodation.
