  1. Allardyce: 'Disappointed but satisfied'published at 10:50

    Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce said he was disappointed with the result but satisifed with the performance after the Black Cats lost 3-1 to Arsenal in the premier League on Saturday.

    He said: "I couldn't ask for any more in terms of the way we played, I couldn't have asked for more in terms of the chances we created, but we failed to take the chances we had.

    "It makes me wonder what would have happened if we'd had Jermain Defoe on the field, he could have had two or three goals. 

    "I'm really disappointed we haven't got anything out of the game, but I have to be satisfied with the performance."

    As the flood waters have receded in Corbridge, more of the damage left in the wake of Storm Desmond has come to light.

    More than 70 homes were evacuated in Corbridge as Storm Desmond caused the River Tyne to reach record levels.

    About six weeks worth of rain fell in a 24-hour period causing the river to rise to a record 19ft (5.79m).

    Anything above 11ft (3.3m) will cause a flood, the river is currently at 5ft (1.56m).

  5. Travel news: Replacement bus service on Metropublished at 09:28

    A replacement bus service is running on  the Tyne and Wear Metro between Heworth and Sunderland, and between South Hylton and Sunderland due to overhead line problems between East Boldon and Brockley Whins.

  6. Newcastle win 'averted crisis'published at 09:18

    Newcastle boss Steve McClaren said his team avoided a crisis thanks to their surprise 2-0 win over Liverpool.

    The Magpies moved above neighbours Sunderland into 18th place in the Premier League and are in the bottom three only on goal difference.

    "It's absolutely huge, absolutely massive," McClaren said of their third league win of the season.

    "Once or twice we've taken ourselves to the brink of crisis and clawed our way back and that's what we've done today."

    We have been speaking to Bob Bailey in Corbridge this morning whose house was flooded over the weekend.

    He said: "Our house was up for sale, it was under offer, but all our plans for the next few years have now totally changed.

    "First thing is to arrange accommodation, sort out insurance and builders, it's a six to nine month rebuild process at a minimum.

    "The scene inside the house will be horrendous, brown mud, all the furniture will be in a heap in the corner, it will look like a bomb attack, just horrible."

    A clean-up operation has begun in Corbridge as flood waters from Storm Desmond recede.

    Six weeks' worth of rain fell in just 24 hours when the River Tyne reached its highest ever level in the town

    All flood warnings and alerts have now been removed for rivers across the North East but 900 homes are still without power this morning.

    Very mild or exceptionally mild everywhere, although the wind will strengthen and breezy conditions will end the day. 

  12. Travel news: Train trouble because of overhead line problemspublished at 08:16

    There is currently no Northern Rail service between Newcastle and Sunderland and no Metro between Pelaw and South Hylton due to overhead line problems at Brockley Whins.

    Go North East and Stagecoach are accepting Metro tickets in the affected area. 

    Bus services 35,X36, 8 operate between Heworth and South Hylton while Go North East service 9 operates between Jarrow and Sunderland.

  13. Travel news: Hartlepool disruptionpublished at 08:07

    There is disruption on the A689 Belle Vue Way in Hartlepool in both directions as one lane is closed between the B1277 Brenda Road junction and the Burn Road junction due to a building fire.

    The blaze started at Niramax on Friday night.
