    There are no fatalities "at the moment" following the explosion in Rosslyn Avenue, police have confirmed.

    A woman has been taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition after she was rescued from the rubble of her home.

    Police say everyone has been "accounted for".

  6. Cause of explosion 'not yet known'published at 11:41 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    The cause of the explosion which took place in Sunderland this morning is "not yet known", Northern Gas Networks says.

    The firm, which supplies gas to the street, said it is "urgently" investigating the cause of the blast, and added that engineers are on the scene.

    A woman on a neighbouring street to Rosslyn Avenue said half a semi-detached house had been flattened and the other half was wrecked in the explosion.

    Tracey Pounder, 51, said: "I heard an almighty bang. "I went upstairs and you could see dust rising."

    "Half of the semi has gone and next door is wrecked. I came down to see what was happening and it is a complete shock."

    Sean Hughes, 40, heard the explosion over a mile away. He said: "I saw the window move and the house shook."

    Update - The evacuation centre for those affected by the explosion is based in the former library on Black Road around the corner from Rosslyn Avenue.

    The emergency services say they are unable to give further details, including whether anyone is trapped in the rubble following the explosion in Sunderland.

    Police, fire and ambulance services are at the scene, with a cordon put in place to keep members of the public away.

    Debris is scattered across the road, with significant damage to the property visible along the residential street.

    A 30m cordon is in place at Rosslyn Avenue in Sunderland, where an explosion took place earlier this morning.

    Police received the first reports of the blast at 08:50 and are now telling people to avoid the area.

    Ryhope Community Centre has been opened for those affected by the incident.
