  2. Man thrown down stairs in nightspot attackpublished at 17:55

    A man has been punched and thrown down the stairs in a Newcastle nightspot.

    The incident took place on 10 September inside House of Smith on Collingwood Street.

    The victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries but police have today released a picture of a man they would like to trace in connection with the attack:

    One of the first cities in the country to begin switching to universal credit was Newcastle upon Tyne.

    Now about 10,000 in the city claim universal credit, which rolls six working-age benefits into a single payment designed to make the system simpler and ensure no-one faces a situation where they would be better off claiming benefits than working.

  4. Drone captures WWI poem written in poppiespublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    The words of one of the most famous poems to emerge from the horrors of World War One have been written in poppies across locations in England, Wales and France.

    It's been done by the Royal British Legion to launch this year's Poppy Appeal to help veterans of the armed forces.

    In Flanders Fields was written by a Canadian officer called John McCrae and is read by poet Michael Rosen.

  11. Man 'standing on roof of house in Middlesbrough'published at 15:20 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    A man is on the roof of a house on Cambridge Road in Middlesbrough, police have confirmed.

    Officers are currently talking to him and the fire service is also there.

    Cambridge Road is currently closed to traffic at its junction with Roman Road.

  13. Shop raider threatened to 'burn' staffpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    Police have released a CCTV image of a suspect wanted in connection with a robbery in Shiremoor in which staff were threatened with being burned.

    The raider escaped with cash from the till of the Spar in Park Lane on the morning of 19 October.

    No-one was hurt in the incident, but police said staff were left shocked.

    Police said a man with a scarf covering his face went into the shop carrying what was believed to be a juice bottle containing flammable liquid and a lighter.

    He threatened to burn staff unless they opened the tills.

  16. Gateshead arrests in people-smuggling raidspublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    Police have arrested 11 people in the UK after overnight raids, as part of a Europe-wide investigation into people smuggling.

    Those arrested were detained in Gateshead, London and Birmingham.

    They are alleged to be part of an organised crime gang that used vehicles with secret compartments to transport people to the UK.

    A further 15 people were arrested in Bulgaria and Belgium during raids at the same time.

    It's possible raiders behind a cash machine explosion in Darlington may have injured themselves, police say.

    The suspects may have miscalculated the amount of explosive material needed, causing a bigger explosion than they expected, officers say.

    At a news conference, Neighbourhood Insp Chris Knox said police believe the thieves got away with an unspecified amount of cash, but that is yet to be confirmed.
