    A £3m scheme to redesign residential streets for people is being drawn up by Newcastle city council.

    Heaton, Jesmond and Fenham could get new junctions and crossings to cater for cyclists and pedestrians.

    There could also be more cycle lanes, more yellow lines and fewer parking spaces.

    The council are accepting proposals until the end of November.

    Work to reduce the risk of flooding in Spennymoor is due to get under way.

    Northumbrian Water is spending about £700,000 on the project to upgrade underground sewage pipes in the Wood Vue area of the town from 30 October.

    The work is expected to last until April 2018.

    Tina Robinson, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: "We know flooding is one of the worst things that can happen to our customers and are fully committed to providing a high quality service by investing in the sewerage network to help reduce the risk of flooding. 

    "We are working closely in partnership with Durham County Council and Spennymoor Town Council to make sure any disruption is kept to a minimum."

  4. Cash machine explosion was 'isolated incident'published at 10:40 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    Police are reassuring Darlington residents that an explosion which took place this morning was a "targeted isolated incident".

    A cash machine was blown up with an explosive device at about 01:00 BST, with the blast heard around the area.

    It is not yet known if the suspects got away with any cash, but a cordon remains in place in Neasham Road as investigations continue.

    The British car designed to go 1,000mph (1,610km/h) will make its first public runs later and it will be driven by a man from Hartlepool.

    RAF Wing Commander Andy Green will be driving the Bloodhound SSC as it conducts initial "slow-speed" trials and should get up to about 200mph (320km/h) on the runway at Newquay Airport.

    The car aims to break the world land speed record in 2019.

    "This is about showing the world what we're about," said Wing Commander Green.

    A man who lives near Matalan in Darlington said his house shook as a "violent explosion" destroyed a cash machine in an attempt to steal money.

    Harry Chown, 28, said: "It looks like thieves have gone overkill on explosives whilst trying to blow open a standalone ATM.

    "It's been obliterated and flattened trees and signs and scattered debris everywhere.

    "Social media suggests people two miles away heard it which explains why my house shook so violently only 500ft (150m) away."

    Mr Chown said the explosion had "shoved" the kiosk containing the cash machine "10m (33ft) along the car park".

    A cash machine has been blown up in an attempt to steal money, police have said.

    The machine outside Matalan in Darlington was targeted at about 01:20 BST today with the explosion heard around the area.

    Durham Police said the explosion on Neasham Road was not terror-related.

    A spokesman said "persons unknown" created an explosion to "gain entry into a cash machine".

    A security cordon is in place and officers are appealing for witnesses.
