    A driver left the scene after crashing into telegraph pole and wall, police have said.

    The Audi A3 crashed on the A69 near Hexham at about 03:00 this morning.

    The car was travelling on the westbound carriageway when it crashed between Haltwhistle and Haydon Bridge.

    A spokesman for Northumbria Police said officers searched the area but no occupants of the vehicle were found.

    Gas was used to blow up a cash machine in Darlington, police have said.

    Thieves targeted the machine outside Matalan on Neasham Road at about 01:20 yesterday, with the blast reportedly heard up to two miles away.

    Durham Police said it believes a "quantity of cash" was stolen.

    Insp Chris Knox said: “We now believe the blast was caused by gas which was ignited.

    "Officers are continuing to follow up a number of lines of inquiry and I would once again like to reassure residents that this was a targeted and isolated incident."

    Former Smiths frontman Morrissey is returning to Newcastle for a concert next year.

    He is embarking on his first UK tour since 2015 and is due to play the Metro Radio Arena on 23 February.

    Other dates include Aberdeen, Leeds, Birmingham and London's Royal Albert Hall.

    A Good Samaritan who drove an assault victim home is being sought by police.

    The man came to the aid of another man in his 20s who had been attacked near Times Square and St James Boulevard in Newcastle in the early hours of 12 October.

    The attacker fled the scene but the man assisted the victim and gave him a lift home to the Slatyford area at about 03:30.

    A 17-year-old male has been arrested but Northumbria Police still want to speak to the Good Samaritan to see if he can help with the case.

    A spokesman said: "This man is not a suspect and officers want to speak to him as a witness. He is described as white, around 5ft 10in (1.78m), with medium length dark hair and a local accent."

    A six-year-old girl suffered possible leg and pelvis injuries after crashing her bike into a sea wall and falling 8ft on to steps.

    The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was called out to help the girl following her fall from the promenade at the north end of Whitley Bay.

    A brigade spokesman said: "Although she landed on her back, the casualty was thought to have avoided serious injury to her head due to the helmet she was wearing."

    She was taken by ambulance to hospital. The spokesman said: "The brigade wishes her a speedy recovery."

    A student from Saltburn is preparing to spend three months in East Africa as part of a gap year helping children and young people.

    Honor Wilkinson-Bell, 18, has been chosen to join a group of volunteers who will be travelling to Malawi in February with the International Service, a charity which supports women, children and disabled people in developing countries across the world.

    She said: “It’s really important that young people like me understand the challenges that other parts of the world face, and although I’m quite apprehensive at the prospect of living in a place that has limited electricity and running water, I’m really looking forward to meeting people and contributing to the amazing work that International Service does across the globe.”

    Honor is raising money for the communities she will be working with by selling homemade jam and cards, bags and prints featuring her own illustrations.

    She is also planning a big dog walk on the beach in December.
