  14. Knitters asked to knit red hats for babiespublished at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2018

Knitters are being asked to make red woollen hats for babies who need extra care.

North Tees Hospital, in Stockton, is taking part part in a national NHS initiative to appeal for knitted hats.

The hats are for babies on the maternity ward who are identified as needing additional care.

They act as a visual cue for staff and it is hoped that additional monitoring means babies are less likely to be separated from their mothers and sent to the neonatal ward.

Zoe gave birth in the ward and her baby, Rocco, (pictured below with hospital staff) was the first to be given a red hat.

She said: "It just brings awareness, the midwives see that he has low sugar levels or a high temperature and he needs extra observation. I think it's a great idea to do."

    BBC Tees
    www.bbc.co.uk/BBCTees

Unions are set to meet this morning following protests last week that caused hours of disruption to travel on the A66 across Teesside.

About 100 protesters gathered on Middlesbrough's Tees Dock Road in a stance against MGT Power, which is building a biomass plant.

It's thought the action was in response to the firm hiring foreign workers instead of local labour, but it has emerged the issue may be to do with health and safety issues and lack of communication.

The Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, is encouraging protesters to go through the proper channels.

The managing director of Virgin Trains, which owns 10% of the venture, and the chief executive of Stagecoach will be in front of the Commons Public Accounts committee to discuss the issue.

GNR failed in 2007 and its successor, National Express, ran into the same difficulties two years later.
