    Virgin Trains East Coast is advising customers not to travel today or tomorrow.

    Trains will not run between Newcastle and Edinburgh for the remainder of the day.

    Services running across the network may be delayed or cancelled, it adds.

    A snow drift at Alnmouth and damage to the overhead wires between Wakefield and Doncaster are also impacting services.

    Rail services in the North East continue to be affected by the weather.

    A Network Rail spokesperson said: "Passengers who were planning to travel to or from Scotland or north of Newcastle are advised not to travel today or tomorrow.

    "Passengers should visit Virgin Trains East Coast website for more information.

    "We're sorry for those who are experiencing disruption and we understand that it can be frustrating, but safety is our top priority and we are working closely with train operators to keep passengers moving where it is safe to do so,"

    This means flooding is expected and "immediate action" is required.

    BBC Newcastle's reporters are across the region keeping an eye on conditions.

    Helen Richardson is in North Tyneside and says: "It's a very similar picture to yesterday in Whitley Bay - the winds are strong and there's snow on top of snow. It's drifting.

    "The gritters have been out, but it will take a while before cars get on to the roads and help that grit do its work."
