  3. George Ormond was previously jailed in 2002published at 17:52 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

Today's 20-year jail sentence for former youth football coach George Ormond comes after he was jailed in 2002 for six years after being found guilty of abusing seven boys under 16 between 1975 and 1999.

His arrest which ended with that trial and conviction came about because of the actions of Derek Bell, who was abused by Ormond. Mr Bell waived his right to anonymity.

Mr Bell (pictured) told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshre progrmme when he saw Ormond waiting outside a hostel for teenagers in Newcastle, he went into a fit of rage - taking a knife to the man's house and kicking his door down.

  4. Judge praises dignity of Ormond's victimspublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

Victims of George Ormond described their shame and embarrassment, and in some cases deep regret that they had not spoken out earlier.

The former youth football coach who went on to work for Newcastle United has been jailed for 20 years after being convicted of a string of sex abuse offences spanning 25 years.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he used his "position of power" to abuse 18 boys and young men between 1973 and 1998.

One said his ambition had been to become a footballer but "that dream turned into a living nightmare".

Judge Edward Bindloss told Ormond: "Some victims you do not even remember - what was for you momentary sexual gratification was for your victims a lifetime of difficulty.

"No-one observing this trial could have failed to have been moved by the complainants and other witnesses over the six weeks of evidence.

"[They were] largely men in their 50s, largely from working class and sporting backgrounds, speaking with calm and quiet dignity about how they failed to understand what was happening to them and because of the times they lived in and due to their circumstances, they were unable to speak about it."

  5. Ormond sentencing 'sends clear message'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

The NSPCC has welcomed the 20-year jail sentence given to a former Newcastle United youth coach after he was convicted of a string of sex abuse offences spanning 25 years.

George Ormond, 62, coached a grassroots football club in the 1970s and 1980s before going on to work for United's youth system in the 1990s.

He was convicted of 35 charges of indecent assault and one of indecency.

An NSPCC spokesperson said: "Today's sentencing sends a clear message that survivors of child sexual abuse will be listened to and can get justice, regardless of how many years have passed.

"This case also underlines the importance of making sport as safe as possible for children."

The NSPCC's Trust to Lead campaign calls on Government to extend position of trust laws to make it illegal for sports coaches and other youth workers to have sex with 16 and 17-year-olds in their care, just like teachers and social workers."

  6. George Ormond 'wholly preoccupied with sex'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

Sentencing George Ormond to 20 years for a string of sex abuse offences, Judge Edward Bindloss said evidence showed he was a man "wholly preoccupied with sex who used his position as a respected football coach to target boys and young men in his care."

During the trial the jury was told that the youth coach "manipulated his position" and held out "glittering future" to young players, but could block their progress if they stood up against him.

He would indecently touch boys while massaging them or treating them for injuries and insist on them not wearing anything under their shorts, then check they had followed the rule.

He was convicted of 35 charges of indecent assault and one of indecency.

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

The North East Ambulance Service has reassured the public that their drivers are dealing with the most urgent emergencies quickly, despite a report showing services deteriorating.

A report to the NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group revealed that month on month the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust response times have deteriorated in Northumberland.

It also said that the the CCG is currently working across the local health economy on initiatives to improve response times, including the creation of alternatives to transporting patients to a hospital.

The report also stated that the ambulance service has been involved in recruiting to vacant posts and reducing sickness absence levels..

    Quote Message

The most important target is what is called the 'C1 Mean' where the ambulance is set the target of reaching the most serious of all cases in seven minutes.

    Quote Message

Since the new targets were introduced in October last year we have regularly hit the seven-minute target set and on the occasions we haven't, it has been eight minutes.

    Quote Message

I would just want to stress to the public that when it comes to emergencies, the North East Ambulance Service continues to provide a reliable and rapid service to the public"

Lynne Hodgson, Director of finance and resources for North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust

The CCG official report added that in 2017/18 their major work plan focused on the A&E four hour wait target and ambulance response time performance.

Cleveland Police have released the dashcam footage from inside the police car that was deliberately rammed by two suspected robbers.

Two Cleveland Police officers needed hospital treatment after their car was hit by a car driven by Terry Smith.

Only the strength of roadside barriers stopped the police car plunging from the 66ft (20m) high Tees Flyover near Middlesbrough in December.

Smith was jailed for nine years and seven months and his passenger Dale Carter was jailed for three-and-a half years.

  11. Anti-social behaviour using up 'precious resources'published at 16:12 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

    Daniel Holland
    Local Democracy Reporter

"Unnecessary" anti-social behaviour in Newcastle is taking precious police and fire service resources away from more important and potentially life-threatening concerns, a new report has warned.

Newcastle City Council's community safety team has also criticised "limited co-ordination" between North East authorities over the issue, which it claims is putting added strain on frontline emergency services.

A report to the Safe Newcastle Board states that cuts to preventative services could be behind a "significant increase in youth anti-social behaviour" that is taking up a disproportionate amount of police time and resources.

According to the report, four in five calls to the police are for non-criminal matters that should in fact be dealt with by the council or other organisations.

However, the report did conclude that Newcastle is coping "admirably" with ASB within the constraints of limited resources.

Northumbria Police Ch Insp Karl Wilson said: "ASB can have a significant impact on residents and it is one of our priorities to tackle these issues."

Forty dogs in the BBC Newcastle area have been put at risk by their owners after being left in hot environments in the space of seven days.

The RSPCA took more than 1,100 calls across the country from concerned members of the public last week.

The heatwave also means staff at sanctuaries, shelters and farms in the North East are putting in extra work to keep their animals cool.

    Quote Message

If they are a bit hot you can wet a towel with cold water, and drape it over your dog to give them a bit of added protection from the heat. We also have animals like pigs and some of the lighter coloured animals that suffer from sunburn so we apply suncream"

  15. Hotel plans for ex passport offices site deferredpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans to replace Durham's passport office with a hotel have been rejected after being deemed "not worthy" of the city.

Councillors defied the recommendation of planning officers to approve the proposals for the former site of Milburngate House, instead telling the applicant to return with an improved scheme.

The chief concerns raised were the appearance of the building, as well as traffic and access to the business.

    Quote Message

Surely a better design could have been achieved and I think that has been highlighted. I think we want the applicants to come back with something that's more appropriate for Durham. This will stand out as something that is not worthy of the Durham vernacular"

    Councillor David Freeman

In March, the council granted permission for six tower blocks in Framwelgate Waterside, across the river from the Gala Theatre and Walkergate complex.

In the same month, an application was submitted for the planned unit closest to Milburngate Bridge to become a 92-bedroom Premier Inn.

Provision for a layby for delivery vehicles to access the site directly from the A690 was another sticking point for councillors, despite highways officers being satisfied with the plans.

According to a report prepared for the planning committee, the application will help bring in an extra £160m of investment to the area and it is hoped the additional bedspace in the city will boost tourism.

As well as Premier Inn, restaurant chains Miller & Carter and Pitcher & Piano are also expected to move on to the 5.2-acre Framwelgate Waterside site.

Lumiere Festival will return to the streets of Durham next year, and there's a call to make it the most ambitious one yet.

Durham County Council’s Cabinet will be asked to recommission organisers Artichoke to deliver large scale events in both 2019 and 2021.

If agreed the 2019 event would bring back a number of the most popular artworks from the previous five festivals to mark the event’s 10th anniversary.

Last year's festival attracted 240,000 people to the city centre.
