    BBC Look North

A Cleveland Police officer has told a court he thought he was going to die after his patrol car was rammed into steel barriers on the A19 flyover during a pursuit.

PC Anthony Cairns, and a colleague, were following 28-year-old Terry Smith and 26-year-old Dale Carter after a suspected robbery on Teesside in December 2017.

PC Cairns said the men carried out "a callous, cowardly and deliberate act" and the officers said they feared being pushed off the 66ft flyover.

At Teesside Crown Court the driver Smith was sentenced to nine-and-half years in prison, while Carter was sentenced to three-and-half years for the robbery.

Newton Aycliffe's Hitachi Rail Europe has joined forces with Derby's Bombadier Transportation to bid to build the new HS2 trains.

Bombardier and Hitachi are already building a high speed train for Italy, but they want to create a "Spitfire of the British Railways, which will be accessible for all".

The almost £3bn contract will be awarded late next year.

    Quote Message

Being from the North East, it's massive. We're in the bidding phase for this contract, then we start towards the end of the month. It's very important that we get local support because this means job security, we can enhance our capability moving forward as a business, and do more in our local factory and supply chain.

  8. Jordan Pickford: From Washington to World Cup heropublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

Saving a penalty that helped England advance to the World Cup quarter-finals looked a million miles away when Jordan Pickford made his first-team debut in January 2012.

Pickford attended the St Robert of Newminster Catholic School in Washington before, when just 17 years old, he turned out for Darlington in a 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood in the Blue Square Premier League.

He made 100 appearances during loan spells with the Quakers, Alfreton, Burton, Carlisle, Bradford and Preston, before he was given a chance at the top level by boyhood club Sunderland just two years ago.

Pickford joined Sunderland's Academy at the age of eight and progressed through age groups at the club before signing his first professional contract in 2011.

A series of loans followed, before being handed his debut by the Black Cats in January 2016 in an FA Cup tie that saw Sunderland beaten 3-1 by Arsenal.

He was given his Premier League debut the following week as Sunderland went down to a 4-1 defeat against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

That Premier League appearances meant Pickford had played in each of the top five leagues in England by the age of 21.

Shortly after his Premier League debut he signed an extension to his Sunderland contract, committing himself to the club until 2020.

He began the 2016-17 campaign as understudy to Vito Mannone, but an injury to the Italian early in the season opened the door for him and at the end of the season he was one of six players to be shortlisted for the PFA young Player of the Year award.

After Sunderland were relegated, he joined Everton on a five-year contract for an initial fee of £25m that made him the most expensive British goalkeeper in history.

Plans include widening the junction of A172 Dixons Bank and Stainton Way to two lanes to ease traffic flow.

A majority of people who took part in a consultation on the proposals were against the plans.

A report will be discussed by Middlesbrough Council's Executive next week and if approved, the changes will be in place by 2020.

    Rebecca O'Neill
    BBC Newcastle

One of the major commuter routes into Newcastle from the south and west has finally reopened after a major water main burst brought chaos on Tuesday.

Scotswood Road was flooded at lunchtime yesterday, causing a number of traffic issues.

Northumbrian Water customers in the city and in Gateshead were left without supply or with low pressure.

It also caused a brief closure of Eldon Square shopping centre, because it would have been unable to operate its sprinkler system.
