The developers behind plans to build Europe's tallest observation wheel in Newcastle say they have submitted a detailed planning application.

The 460ft (140m) high Whey Aye is proposed to be the centrepiece of a development which includes trampolines, climbing wall, a skywalk, five-a-side pitches, tennis courts and a virtual golf club.

Phil Lynagh, chief executive officer of World Wheel Company said: “We are proposing a £100m regeneration and inward investment project that will create local jobs and ongoing revenue for the regional economy.

"After working on our plans for the Giants on the Quayside for nearly two years, we’re very pleased to be formally submitting our planning application for this world class development."

He said the application was due to be put on Newcastle City Council's planning portal early in the new year.
