  5. Northumbrian Water's 'fine to flush' fight against fatbergspublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2019

Hands up anyone who's flushed a wet wipe down the toilet?

We don't want to worry you, but you've probably - perhaps inadvertently - contributed to the creation of those big, solid lumps of wet wipes, fat, oil and grease known as fatbergs.

Very big, in some cases. There was one in London that was 250 metres long and weighed as much as 19 elephants.

The solution Northumbria Water has come up with is better labeling so we know which wipes we can and can't flush.

If it has a Fine to Flush symbol it will have passed strict tests to check the wipe doesn't contain plastic and will break down in the sewer system.

Apparently even some products currently labeled "flushable" would not pass the tests.

  6. Sunderland bridge will stay open during repairspublished at 09:27 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2019

The Chartershaugh Bridge will not need to be closed while repairs are carried out, transport bosses have said.

Council chiefs are expected to approve a £250,000 package of works on the structure, which carries the A182 over the River Wear, next week.

But while some restrictions might have to be put in place, drivers should still be able to use the crossing while the project is carried out.

Amy Wilson, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "While there may be some lane closures during works, the bridge will not be closed to traffic.

"As part of this council's commitment to our city's highways, we are looking to invest an extra £15m in highway assets, including bridges, over the next four years."

According to a report prepared for the city council's cabinet, which will make a decision on the works when it meets on 16 January, inspections have shown work is needed to the underside of the bridge.

As well as repainting steelwork, the project is also expected to include repairs to the concrete piers which support the crossing.

Insp Darren Bainbridge said: "It seemed only fitting that this equipment be put to use in the local community and West Park Primary School was suggested due to its status as an eco-school.

"The caretaker, Mr Bell, was on hand to receive the items and help unload them from the van. We hope that the children enjoy learning about the garden and we're pleased that items seized from criminality can now be put to good use."

Anyone who may have information regarding drugs activity in their area is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101.

  15. Durham Tees Valley airport 'worth over £50m to local economy'published at 16:52 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2019

    BBC Tees

The Tees Valley Mayor has said that the area's airport is worth more than £50m to the local economy and supports more than 1,000 jobs.

Ben Houchen's comments come as the chairman of Durham Tees Valley Airport has today warned it could close if Mayor Houchen's plan to buy it is rejected in two weeks' time.

Airport chairman Robert Hough, who also chairs the site's current owners Peel Airports Group, says the airport's future is "extremely uncertain" if the five Tees Valley Labour council leaders vote down the Mayor's plan to buy the site on the 24 January.

Ben Houchen says the airport is of huge value to the area and that today's announcement should act as a start warning.
