Drinkers on nights out in Durham are being asked not to dispose of their underwear by flushing it down the toilet.

Boxers and knickers have been found in some of our region's sewage works, along with dead cows and horses which have been stuffed down manholes instead of being properly disposed of.

Northumbrian Water production operator Chris Hepple says they get a lot of food in the sewage too.

"People must buy radishes and not eat them - we get a lot of radishes, oranges, potatoes coming into the works," he said.

"Found an old mobile phone the other day, of about 1980, and the odd bra, underpants, where I think people have had accidents in nearby pubs."

  6. Councils put pollution charges on holdpublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Fergus Hewison
    BBC Newcastle political reporter

It looks like we won't be seeing charges for high polluting vehicles on Tyneside's busiest roads.

Newcastle, Gateshead, and North Tyneside councils say they want to look at other ways of tackling pollution, because a toll would not reduce traffic enough.

The government has told cities to improve air quality by introducing "clean air zones".

One option would be to charge drivers who have the highest polluting vehicles.

Michael Duff from Wallsend took his own life without any charges being brought by police.

His daughter Lesley now lives with unanswered questions, threats of rape against her, and the belief that such groups are hindering - rather than enabling - justice.

"I loved him to bits. He was a born entertainer," Lesley says.

She had never suspected he might have another side, which might lead him to contact a child, aged 15, online - and arrange to meet them in person.

  15. Firefighters in Durham could be shifted out of the city permanentlypublished at 17:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    James Harrison

Firefighters in Durham could be shifted out of the city permanently under cost-cutting plans backed by council chiefs.

Under the proposals, the second crew based at Durham Fire Station, in Lanchester Road, would be moved to Spennymoor.

It would also see a shake-up of staffing arrangements in Seaham and Newton Aycliffe which is hoped will save about £450,000.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service is consulting on the scheme as it tries to plug a gap in its finances left by government funding cuts.

Chief fire officer Stuart Errington said: "I'm still lobbying with the Home Office really hard to stop the cuts because we're getting to the point where we're going to see some really big cuts which will increase the risk to the public.

Durham Fire and Rescue Service HQ

"I think we've done as well as we can to get to this point."

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) has set a target to cut £448,000 from its budget in 2019-20.

CFO Errington said the changes were needed, but also stressed no decision had been made yet.

A consultation on the changes started in November and the public have until 4 February to submit comments.

A report on the survey's findings is expected to be debated by the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Authority on 22 February.
