  11. In pictures: The concrete blocks that protected Britainpublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

    BBC Tees

More than 100 years ago acoustic mirrors along the coast of England were used to detect the sound of approaching German zeppelins.

The concave concrete structures were designed to pick up sound waves from enemy aircraft, making it possible to predict their flight trajectory, giving enough time for ground forces to be alerted to defend the towns and cities of Britain.

Joe Pettet-Smith has compiled a collection of photos of some of these mirrors including ones in Redcar and Sunderland.

  14. Film row sees MP invited to visit Northumberland food bankspublished at 15:49 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

Wansbeck Labour MP Ian Lavery has invited the Conservative Party's deputy chairman to visit food banks in Northumberland following a Twitter row over the film I, Daniel Blake.

Mr Lavery said he was making the gesture in response to James Cleverly's remark that the North East-set film "was not a documentary".

Mr Cleverly had himself been replying to a post by Labour MP Rebecca Long-Bailey, who recommended people "in any doubt about the human cost of Tory austerity on our communities" should watch it.

Mr Cleverly's comments showed a "lack of compassion and understanding" and caused "deep hurt" to people relying on organisations such as the Wansbeck Valley Foodbank, Mr Lavery says.

Directed by Ken Loach, the film tells the story of a man who must rely on welfare after a heart attack leaves him unable to work.
