The former gatehouse at Redcar steelworks has been demolished on the fifth anniversary of the site's liquidation.
It has been knocked down as part of plans to build a new £1m entranceway for the redeveloping Teesworks site which Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said should be complete by Christmas.
Mr Houchen said: “The pain, job losses and economic impact from this site’s closure five years ago cannot be understated. The closure ripped the heart out of communities. The heart-breaking image of one worker leaving his boots and hard hat by the site showed the human impact of the closure. The only local people I want to see at the Teesworks entrance now are those lined up ready to take advantage of all of the jobs we’re creating on the site.
“We’ll soon see diggers on the site and construction under way on the state-of-the-art gateway, which will be an impressive shop window for our international investors and something local people can be proud of."

Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston has urged people to follow new restrictions on social mixing designed to stop the spread of coronavirus, so they can be relaxed as soon as possible.
From midnight it will become illegal for people from different households to mix in any indoor setting or private garden in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.
The law covers homes and public venues such as pubs and restaurants.
The same restrictions came into force on Wednesday in Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and County Durham County Council areas.
Quote MessageThe law changes overnight and I urge everyone in Middlesbrough to abide by the restrictions. I'm confident that families and businesses will do their bit, get our infection rate down and then we can work with the government on easing things as soon as possible.
Quote MessageI have every confidence we can get through this together as a town and we are keen to work with the government."

A woman was threatened by a man with a knife during an attempted rape in a Middlesbrough park, police have said.
The woman in her 20s was confronted by the man on LInthorpe Road at about 22:00 BST yesterday, Cleveland Police said.
A spokeswoman said the man took her to Albert Park where he attempted to rape her, but he ran away after she shouted to passers-by.
The force said the incident ended at about 22:45 BST and are appealing for witnesses.
"The woman was physically uninjured but has been left extremely shaken by the incident and is being supported by officers," the spokeswoman said.
Two men, aged 17 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape. They have since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.
The five councils say it is vital the government takes local circumstances into account.

Read MorePolice have identified a man who died in a cemetery while voluntarily tidying up graves.
Northumbria Police issued a number of appeals to help identify the man after he was found unresponsive on 17 September in All Saints Cemetery in Jesmond and said if his identity remained unknown he could be buried in an unmarked grave.
A concerned resident contacted the force about their missing neighbour and police have now identified him as 68-year-old Jesmond local Michael Elund.
The former welder is survived by his brother and sister, who said above all they will remember him for his kindness and called him "very caring", a police spokeswoman said.
He had brought his own tools to the cemetery and had been cutting back hedges around the gravestones when he collapsed and died of natural causes.
Det Insp Jonathan May said: “I want to thank the public for their support in aiding this appeal.
“I know many people were deeply touched by the circumstances surrounding this case and we were all determined that the kind volunteer, now named as Michael Elund, was given a fitting burial and resting place.
“It would likely have been impossible to identify Mr Elund if it was not for the public’s support, resilience and the genuine concern shown – thank you all.”

Doctors' leaders in the North East are calling for better local information on infection rates and how to stay safe.
It follows the introduction of tougher restrictions applying to Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Sunderland, County Durham and Northumberland.
The British Medical Association is calling for the government to work with local authorities and NHS leaders to deliver a far more effective public information campaign, so that people understand what they need to do to stay safe and drive infection rates down.
Dr George Rae (pictured), chair of the BMA North East regional council, said: “To date, local restrictions have been poorly explained and communicated, even from the very top, leaving many people completely baffled about what the situation in their communities is, and what they can and can’t do."
Quote MessageThat’s why we are calling on the government to provide more power and resources to local agencies who are well-placed to communicate effectively with the populations they serve."
