From midnight tonight even tighter restrictions are being brought in to try to stem the spread of coronavirus across seven council areas in the North East.

Council leaders in the region have said they had no prior warning of yesterday's announcement, and are still waiting for more guidance on the finer details of the measures.

So what are the main changes?

    • From midnight tonight it will be illegal to meet people from outside our household or social bubble in homes and gardens, and venues such bars or restaurants. With £200 fines applicable to anyone caught doing so.
    • So can we still meet our mates in pub beer gardens? The Department of Health has since confirmed that meeting in beer gardens remains advised against but isn't against the law.
    • What about grandparents and childcare? We know informal childcare can continue, for example grandparents looking after grandchildren. People in support bubbles can continue to meet in any setting.
    • Can you still go to the gym? Yes you can continue to go to gyms where Covid-safe practices are in place.

    We hope that helps you.

  8. Grandparent bubbles remain amid new restrictionspublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 29 September 2020

It's one question lots of people want an answer to, as tougher restrictions are brought in at midnight for seven council areas aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus.

"What do the rules mean if I'm in a bubble with grandparents?"

The Department of Health and Social Care says:

"As announced last week, childcare bubbles will be able to form in areas of intervention to allow families to share caring responsibilities with another household, as long as they are consistent.

"This includes formal and informal childcare arrangements. People in support bubbles in these areas can also continue to meet in any setting."

So there you go - informal childcare arrangements are allowed to continue.

  9. Grave collapse man faces burial in unmarked gravepublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 29 September 2020

Police are continuing to try and identify a man who was found dead in Jesmond earlier this month.

They say he risks being buried in an unmarked grave if he is not identified soon.

Paramedics were called to All Saints Cemetery on Jesmond Road on 17 September after a member of the public came across a man who had collapsed and was unresponsive.

He had brought his own tools to the cemetery and had been cutting back hedges around the gravestones when he collapsed and died of natural causes.

    • The man is described as around 55 to 75 years old
    • 5ft 9in, white, of a medium build, bald on top with grey thinning sides and a short white trimmed beard.
    • On the day of his death he was wearing a white polo shirt and dark coloured trousers and shoes.
    • He was carrying a blue plastic bag containing his gardening tools and a flask

Sadly, police say they've investigated every report and have exhausted current leads. They're urging anyone who knew him to get in touch.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

  16. Greggs hints at job cuts as furlough scheme endspublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 29 September 2020

    BBC Business News

Bakery chain Greggs has hinted at possible job cuts as the government's furlough scheme ends.

The company, which employs 25,000 workers, expects business activity to "remain below normal for the foreseeable future".

It said it had reviewed staff costs and was currently consulting with unions and employee representatives.

Greggs said it wanted to reduce the risk of job cuts by putting people on reduced hours.

However, it is not clear if the company will use the government's new Job Support Scheme where employers and the state top up workers' pay who are on fewer hours.

The scheme will replace the existing furlough programme which is coming to an end on 31 October. The vast majority of Gregg's 25,000 workforce had been placed on furlough during lockdown.
