It looked like this game may have been edging towards a draw by mid-afternoon, thanks to a gutsy partnership from Colin Ackermann and Graham Clark.

They put on 145 for the sixth wicket and appeared to have piloted their side to calmer waters, only for everything to go a bit Josh Tongue! (We have to thank a listener for that one).

Clark was on 62 when he was bowled at the start of the 80th over, and Tongue then through the rest of the Durham order. He took four wickets for four runs in two overs, including Ackermann for 124.

Durham lost 5-21 in six and a half overs and were all out to leave themselves with a lead of just 88 runs. Tongue finished with 5-66.

I said Durham needed to bat until well after tea to save this one. But they didn't.

Colin Ackermann has become the eighth Durham batsman to score a century in both innings of a first-class game.

Following his 116 in the first innings, he's reached three figures in the second, in a very watchful and studious manner. It came in 195 balls and 13x4s.

Last season David Bedingham scored centuries in both innings at Blackpool, while Alex Lees did it at Leicester in 2023 and Sean Dickson at Worcester in 2022.

Ackermann and Graham Clark put on 93 for the sixth Durham wicket in the first innings on Friday and have added 113 today. But the team needs them to stay together for a lot longer than this if they are to save the game.

Notts have got their tails up and have taken two wickets in the first 40 minutes this morning. Durham are bogged down and could be heading for a heavy defeat unless someone can put a partnership together.

Ollie Robinson was the first to fall, edging Dillon Pennington to Lyndon James at first slip. He was on seven at the time and James' team-mates gave him a big pat on the back after he'd shelled two previous chances!

Pennington then got Will Rhodes lbw for two. He's had a debut to forget. He was out for 10 in the first innings and his bowling was expensive too, 2-88 in just 15 overs.

The bowling has been razor sharp today though and the batsmen are struggling.

Although Colin Ackermann has reached his second 50 of the game, who is going to hang around with him and dig Durham out of bother? It's also taken 53 minutes for the first boundary of the day.

    Notts 579 v Durham 378 & 114-3

It could be an exciting day at Trent Bridge, particularly if Notts take two or three early wickets. If that happens they will be in a great position to press for the win.

Durham need some big partnerships to take this one into late afternoon. There was a bit of variable bounce last night, with one or two deliveries shooting along the floor. The batsmen will have to be careful because of that.

But it is also a quick-scoring ground with a tiny boundary on one side. And if Durham get off to a decent start with the bat that deficit will be gone in no time.

To save the game they basicaly need to bat past tea. Partnerships are key, but so too will be the bowling of the likes of Fergus O'Neill, who has taken seven wickets in the game so far, and Farhan Ahmed, the 17-year-old spinner who may be able to get some turn on a worn track.

    Durham 378 & 106-3 v Notts 579

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

We're into the final few overs of day three at Trent Bridge and Notts are in a good position to push for a win tomorrow.

After a wobbly start Durham recovered for a period but have now just lost Ben McKinney for 37. He was caught by keeper Joe Clarke off the bowling of Josh Tongue.

It came an over after Tongue thought he had the batsman caught at first slip, only to see Lyndon James put him down.

Earlier they were 29-2 when Fergus O'Neill had Alex Lees lbw and then bowled Emilio Gay two balls later, to leave him with a pair.

Colin Ackermann then joined McKinney in the middle and the two added 71 runs in 15 overs before the latter was out.

  20. James' third century against Durhampublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 6 April

    Notts 552-9 v Durham 378

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

I said earlier Lyndon James averaged 92 against Durham going into this innings. It was actually 96 and it's heading upwards because he's got another century against them today.

He has five centuries in first-class cricket and three are against Durham. He brought it up with his 14th four and followed that with a six into the Bridgford Road stand.

Notts are in a real position of strength here but because they are nine down, tea is delayed.

However with a 49-yard boundary on the Bridgford Road side of the ground a lead of 172, on a very good batting track, may not be that big.
