18:25 GMT 8 February 2022Tributes have been paid to Hartlepool's ceremonial mayor Brenda Loynes, who has died after a long battle with cancer.
Shane Moore, the leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, described her as "the most amazing public servant, mayor and friend" who was "totally committed to residents and the council she served with pride".
Councillor Loynes represented the Rural West ward as a Conservative and had served as mayor since 2019, raising thousands of pounds for local charities.
Denise McGuckin, the council's managing director, said Councillor Loynes was "loved and admired by so many people across Hartlepool".
A civic funeral will be held in due course.
Quote MessageThere were two things in life that mattered to Brenda more than anything else - Hartlepool and her family. My thoughts are with all those who loved her at this very sad time.”
