Crews have been ambushed 20 times since the start of the year, Cleveland Fire Brigade said.
Seventeen of the attacks have been in Hemlington, where youths have deliberately set fires and then hidden waiting for crews to arrive, it said.
Such attacks have seen fire engines damaged which has resulted in them being taken out of service for repair.
Assistant chief fire officer Carl Boasman said: "It is completely unacceptable for our staff to be subject to violence and acts of vandalism whilst protecting the public.
"Our job is being made more difficult by the thoughtless actions of a minority intent on setting fires and then trying to injure staff and damage engines.
"Such violence puts firefighters at risk of serious injury."
The service has appealed for help in tracing those responsible.
Two-year-old Daniel Green was found at a house in Guisborough and died later in hospital.
