    Andrew Barton
    BBC Local Live, York

Struggling dairy farmers are to get more money from a new milk product hitting the shelves today.

Asda and the dairy co-operative Arla have brought out a four-pinter which guarantees 25p back to farmers for every bottle sold.

The product is being launched today at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Britain's dairy industry and its farmers have faced one of its most difficult periods in decades, as they've tried to push for fairer prices.

The deal is the largest of its kind and comes as research released today shows that two thirds of shoppers would be willing to pay more for a product that directly supports farmers and their families.

It follows the success of a similar scheme at Morrisons supermarkets.

  10. New weapon in fight against rural crimepublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 12 July 2016

The North Yorkshire Police rural taskforce are showing off their eye-catching police tractor at the Great Yorkshire Show as part of their campaign to raise awareness of rural crime.

    Georgey Spanswick
    Presenter, BBC Radio York

The 158th Great Yorkshire Show is under way and one of the big issues people are talking about at this year's event is how Britain's EU exit will affect the farming industry.

    georgey spanswick

I've just caught up with Meurig Raymond, the president of the National Farmer's Union.

He said he thinks we're a long way from actually leaving Europe and any of the impact that might have.

    Quote Message

I want the new Prime Minister to champion British farming. She'll have to trigger Article 50 and after that there's at least two years until we have to come out and we're still guaranteed our rights while we're still members of the European Union."

  12. 'It's like a car park on the A59': Show visitorpublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 12 July 2016

Andrew from Kirkbymoorside called BBC Radio York from the A59 on his way to the Great Yorkshire Show.

He says he's been sitting at the Whixley crossroads - about 10 miles from the showground - for an hour.

Andrew says the road is "like a car park."

    Andrew Barton
    BBC Local Live, York

As farmers gather in Harrogate for the annual get-together of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society it's been revealed that the number of dairy farms in England and Wales has fallen by more than 1,000 in three years.

One in 10 farms has closed since June 2013, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

North Yorkshire lost 89 farms, the highest total of any county.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board said it was concerned by the milk price paid to farmers.

Yorkshire dairy farmer Jeremy Holmes (pictured below) said traditional dairy farming was "in a mess", with "far too much milk on the market".

As you can see from this delightful pic, I've already caught up with Charles Mills, the Show Director - it's his first show in the "top job".

    Quote Message
