  1. New housing plan for York: 'An attempt to protect its historic character'published at 09:26 British Summer Time 3 August 2016

    BBC Radio York

People living in York are being invited to have their say on where thousands of new homes in the city will be built.

The first of a series of drop-in sessions is taking place today at the council's main offices.

The new Local Plan is half the size of the last one, which was rejected. The council's now aiming to build about 500 homes a year instead of 1,000.

Deputy Leader and Liberal Democrat councillor Keith Aspden says that so far people have welcomed that reduction.

    Quote Message

Once you've taken out greenbelt sites and safeguarded land, a lot of communities recognise it's an attempt to grow York but protect its historic character."

    Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat councillor

A cloudy start to the day with breaks in the cloud developing throughout the morning.

We should see some good, prolonged spells of sunshine today but are also at risk of some isolated showers. Some of these showers do have the potential to turn quite heavy.

  3. Why do people holiday in Scarborough?published at 08:26 British Summer Time 3 August 2016

    Bethan Bell
    BBC News Online

The Englishperson's lack of interest in the national seaside is so dire calls have been made for a special "tsar" to be appointed to deal with our apathy

But no matter how the issue is tackled, are we really going to flock to the grey, windswept expanses of gritty sand to frolic in icy brown ankle-deep water?

Perhaps a leaf can be taken from Scarborough's book - it's one of the few domestic beach resorts bucking the national trend and actually attracting holidaymakers and day trippers.

I've been to the east coast to find out about Scarborough's enduring appeal.

  4. Punched, bitten and kicked: Fifty attacks on North Yorkshire ambulance crews in last three yearspublished at 08:12 British Summer Time 3 August 2016

It's feared attacks on ambulance workers in North Yorkshire are going unreported.

Unions say they fear crews are not speaking out when they've been assaulted on duty.

There have been more than 50 attacks on paramedics, drivers and technicians in the county in the past three years, according to figures seen by BBC Radio York.

Bex, from North Yorkshire, has told us she's still taking medication after being attacked in her ambulance 18 months ago:

    BBC Travel

So far so good on North Yorkshire's roads this morning.

If you're in the A1079 Hull Road area of York later you'll need to allow a little more time to reach your destination, due to a diversion in place at its junction with Melrosegate, where major gas works are taking place.

In the Selby area, work to resurface the A63 Selby bypass continues. The road's closed in both directions, between the Wishing Well roundabout and the Thorpe Willoughby roundabout.
