  2. Watch: World's most famous vet 'just wanted to write a book'published at 14:13 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    It's 100 years since the birth of the world's most famous vet, Alf Wight, who practiced in Thirsk and was better known to millions of TV viewers as James Herriot.

    His adventures inspired the famous series of books on which the TV series All Creatures Great and Small was based.

    I've been to the World of James Herriot in Thirsk today to speak to Alf White's son, Jim, who says his dad was always surprised by American tourists bursting into tears when they met him.

  3. Nine new 'Specials' to pound North Yorkshire beatpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Nine new Special Constables take to North Yorkshire streets this month.

    Special Constables are volunteer officers who give up their own time to support their regular colleagues.

    The officers will now be assigned tutor constables who will oversee their probation period over the next two years.

    Two of the specials will be based in York, two in Selby, four in Scarborough, and one in Harrogate, and have the same legal powers and powers of arrest as regular officers.

    Acting Deputy Chief Constable Paul Kennedy says he hopes the officers and their families share his sense of pride in their achievements:

    This afternoon will be dry with long spells of sunshine and a maximum temperature of about 16C (61F) with a light southeast wind.

    It is the eighth day of the search for missing Yorkshire toddler, Ben Needham.  

    Police on the Greek island of Kos have asked for permission to demolish part of a farmhouse.

    The extension to the property was constructed after the 21-month-old from Sheffield went missing in 1991.

  9. New £1.2m mental health facility opens in Yorkpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    More now on the new temporary mental health facility in York due to start taking in patients from today.

    The previous facility, at Bootham Park hospital (pictured), closed after inspectors found it unsafe.

    People needing in patient treatment since Bootham Park closed have had to travel to Middlesbrough, about 50 miles away.

    Ruth Hill, of Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust, said the Trust is aware of how difficult it's been for service users and their families.

    She says: "Over the last 12 months we've done all we can, including helping with travel arrangements and costs but we know it hasn't been easy."

    The new £1.2m Peppermill Court project (pictured below) has taken eight months to complete.

    The male and female wards each have 12 single bedrooms and direct access to gardens.

    The health trust says patients, carers and staff were involved in the refurbishment of Peppermill Court and "worked with the architect on the design and helped to choose the furnishings, colour scheme and artwork for the walls".

    The trust is in consultation about a permanent hospital to replace Bootham Park and hopes to open a 60-bed facility in 2019.

    A 20-year-old man has been left needing hospital treatment after being assaulted in a York bar at the weekend, external.

    The incident happened at about 01:00 on Sunday 2 October in Vodka Revolution on Coney Street. The victim suffered a gash to the head.

    A 29-year-old woman has been arrested  on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

    Police say the bar would have been busy at the time and want anyone with any information about the assault to contact them.

    Scarborough chip shop and takeaway owners are being shown how to put healthier options on their menu today.

    It's part of a new campaign to try to tackle obesity and is the first time a session like this has been held anywhere in North Yorkshire. 

    The man behind the scheme is David Miller, a Trading Standards officer with North Yorkshire County Council.

    He told me healthy choices can be offered by making very small changes:

    Police searching for missing Yorkshire toddler Ben Needham on the Greek island of Kos have asked for permission to demolish part of a farmhouse.

    The extension to the property was constructed after the 21-month-old from Sheffield went missing in 1991.

    The toddler's family believe he was abducted, but police are investigating whether he was accidentally killed.

    South Yorkshire Police say they're confident permission for the demolition would be given.

    A man has had to undergo surgery after his jaw was broken during an attack by a group of men.

    The assault, on the injured man and two other men, happened at about 01:30 on Sunday 25 September between the Beeswing pub and the Esso garage.

    Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information about it, to contact them.

  18. Injured York panto star 'astounding' hospital staff with recoverypublished at 08:50

    York panto star, actor and BBC radio presenter Martin Barrass, who was seriously hurt in a motorbike crash in the Dales in September, is "astounding hospital staff with his continuing recovery," according to his family.

    In a statement on social media they say: "Martin's appetite is gradually returning and he's certainly making up for lost time by the amount of tea he is drinking!

    "Martin has lost a lot of weight and tires very quickly but his Yorkshire grit and determination to get back to family and friends shines through," they add.

    If his progress continues, Mr Barrass's family say they're hopeful he may be moved from Leeds General Infirmary to York within the coming week and have again expressed their thanks for all the messages of support they've received.

    A new temporary mental health facility in York is due to start taking patients from today. 

    The city has been without any in patient beds since Bootham Park Hospital closed suddenly just over a year ago after being found "not fit for purpose".

    Since October, people needing treatment in York have had to travel to Middlesbrough. 

    Ruth used the services at Bootham, and has told BBC Radio York she's pleased the new place is opening.

  20. Virgin Trains East Coast rail staff strike under waypublished at 08:07 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Workers on Virgin Trains East Coast have begun a 24-hour strike in a long-running dispute over jobs.

    The RMT union says about 1,800 members, including train crew and some drivers, are taking action against threatened job cuts and disputes over working conditions and safety.

    General secretary Mick Cash said: "RMT will not sit back while nearly 200 members' jobs are under threat."

    Virgin Trains said it would be running a full timetable during the strike.
