    A fish and chip shop in Idle, Bradford, has won the 'Healthy Eating Fish and Chips Award' at the 2017 National Fish & Chip Awards in London.

    But before you get excited that Towngate Fisheries have come up with the answer to all of our dreams of a portion of fish and chips that is good for you, I have bad news.

    The award recognises that they "excel in educating and informing their customers about healthy eating choices".  

    But whatever, it's great to to have a one of the best chip shops in the country on our doorstep.

    A Labour party member in Sheffield says he doesn't trust senior members of his own party over the Amey tree-felling programme which has led to public protests. 

    He says council leader Julie Dore admitted to a local party meeting that she hadn't seen the full contract.

    The authority says it's not usual practice for members to read a complex contract which is 7,000 pages long.

    But the man, who doesn't want to be named, says cabinet members are ignoring local Labour members' wishes:

    The master of a North Yorkshire hunt who was captured making lewd comments to a female protester has now resigned from his role as a councillor. 

    Charles Carter - the master of the Middleton hunt - was filmed via Facebook Live asking if the demonstrator would go to bed with him. 

    He was suspended by the Conservative party, and has now stepped down from Breckland Council in Norfolk.

    Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies has signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal.

    The 24-year-old joined the Tykes from Sheffield Wednesday in June 2014 and has made 88 league appearances.

    Boss Paul Heckingbottom told the club website:, external "I'm delighted that Adam has decided to commit his future to the club and there is no doubt that he thoroughly deserves this deal."

    A homeless man has been charged over a series of assaults in Staincross in Barnsley last month.

    It's alleged that 33-year-old Stewart Caves, of no fixed address, assaulted a 34-year-old man at a house in Grove Road on 10 December. The victim  suffered serious injuries.

    The suspect has also been charged with two further counts of assault on a 31-year-old woman on the same day. 

  11. Baseball bat-wielding robbers steal businesswoman's takingspublished at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    A businesswoman has been robbed of her takings after two men armed with baseball bats forced her to stop as she was driving in the Middleton area of Leeds.

    It happened at about 23:30 last night on Broom Grove. 

    The woman was forced to stop and then two men banged on the car and demanded her money.   

    The pair the escaped with a "large amount of cash" in a car that police think may be a 2000-plate Vauxhall Corsa.

    Sheffield City Council has won government funding to help projects aimed at getting more people to cycle or walk to work.

    The £7.5m, which is part of the Department for Transport's cycling strategy, aims to deliver:

    • more safety and awareness training for cyclists 
    • extra secure cycle storage
    • bike repair and maintenance courses
    • road safety measures
    • mapping information for pedestrians
    • real-time bus information through smart phone apps or information at bus stops
    • increased focus on car-sharing clubs

    The government says that by 2040 it wants walking and cycling to be "the natural choice|" for shorter journeys.   

  13. Meredith Kercher murder case 'left me in debt'published at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    Raffaele Sollecito, the man who was cleared of killing Leeds student Meredith Kercher, has said he has been left in financial difficulty by the legal costs incurred while proving his innocence.

    Mr Sollecito was arrested in 2007, along with his then-girlfriend Amanda Knox, for the murder of Ms Kercher in Italy.

    He was twice convicted before Italy's highest court found him not guilty.

    He has launched a compensation bid against the Italian government. The hearing is on Friday.

    Doncaster Council has denied being reckless with taxpayers' money when dealing with the homeless

    We reported earlier that the head of a charity called M25 Housing had said hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money was spent dealing with the town's tent city. 

    But Pat Hagan, Doncaster Council's head of service for communities, insists they used existing budgets to help people:

    The Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg has welcomed news that three people who were arrested during a stand-off about the felling of eight trees in Sheffield have had the case against them dropped.

    Jenny Hockey, who's 70, and 72-year-old Freda Brayshaw made up part of the 'Rustlings Road Three', charged with public order offences after protesting outside their homes when contractors turned up:

  17. Clifford's Tower: High Court judge orders judicial reviewpublished at 15:05 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    There will be a judicial review into a planned redevelopment at York's Clifford's Tower.

    This judicial review was sought by independent councillor Johnny Hayes, who's been crowdfunding to pay for legal costs. 

    He believes the planning permission process for a visitor centre at the historic tower has been "seriously flawed". 

    City of York Council had approved the plans from English Heritage - which says it wants to "dramatically improve the visitor experience".

    People in Sheffield are being asked to keep an eye out for a vulnerable man who has gone missing, external in the city today.

    John was last seen at around 08:55 in the Thornsett Road area of Nether Edge.

    John is described as being around 6ft 3ins tall, of medium build. He was wearing a dark jacket with a grey t-shirt and blue jogging bottoms.

    Concerns are growing for John’s welfare and officers are keen to hear from anyone who might have seen him.

  19. Leeds' Kirkgate Market is 'nation’s favourite'published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    Kirkgate Market in Leeds has been named as the nation's favourite at the Market of the Year Awards.

    The market opened in 1857 and is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe. This is the second time it has won the award.

    The national competition is run by the government and voted on by the public, with 125,000 votes cast in total.

    York Minster is hosting a commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day, external later today.

    It starts with Evensong in the Quire at 17:15 followed at 18:00 by a procession into the Chapter House for the 600 candles commemoration. 

    The number 600 is a way of representing the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust.

    The event is also a chance to remember all victims of genocide right up to the present day, through music, testimony and time for reflection.
