    A man who fitted a device to his car to jam police safety cameras has been given a suspended prison sentence.

    Ben Kitto, from Scarborough, had used the laser jamming device on the A64 in North Yorkshire in June.

    The 41-year-old pleaded guilty to speeding and attempting to pervert the course of justice at York Crown Court on Monday.

    He was given a two-month jail term, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay £2,200 in fines and costs.

  2. Bodies of two people found in house near Thirskpublished at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    Police say they're treating the death of two people near Thirsk in North Yorkshire as "unexplained".

    Officers were called to a property at Islebeck last Wednesday after concerns were raised for the occupants. 

    The bodies of a man and a woman were discovered. 

    Formal identification has not yet been carried out.

  3. Raheem Wilks shooting: Two more arrestspublished at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    Another man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the shooting of Raheem Wilks.

    The 30-year-old man was arrested by armed officers at a house in Hunslet yesterday. 

    A 31-year-old woman was also arrested from the house on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both are in custody.

    There have now been 13 people arrested over the shooting, which happened in Harehills on 26 January.

    Halifax MP Holly Lynch wants any attacks against firefighters, ambulance staff, police officers or health care professionals to be taken more seriously and always dealt with in a Crown Court. 

    The Labour MP will make her case in Parliament later. 

  5. Man jailed for Barnsley petrol station hit-and-runpublished at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    A man who used his car "as a weapon" to run down a petrol station attendant as he attempted to drive away with £120 of diesel fuel has been jailed for 17 months. 

    Scott Dearing, 30, drove into Michelle Carr as he attempted to flee the Jet petrol station in Park Road, Barnsley, on 4 December.

    Miss Carr suffered "bumps and bruises" after being thrown on to the bonnet of the car before falling off.

    Dearing, of no fixed abode, was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court, having previously pleaded guilty to eight offences, including assault, dangerous driving and theft.

  7. Man guilty of laser jamming police safety camera on A64 escapes jailpublished at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    A man from North Yorkshire who used a laser device to jam a police safety camera on the A64 has escaped jail. Ben Kitto from Scarborough was convicted of speeding and attempting to pervert the course of justice at York Crown Court yesterday.  

    This morning he was sentenced to a two month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work. He's got to pay £2,200 fine and costs and he has been given five penalty points.

  8. Do you know what happened to Laughton murder victim?published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    The body of Steven Fretwell, 47, was discovered at a property in Kingswood Avenue, Laughton, near Rotherham in December.

    A post-mortem examination revealed he died as a result of multiple injuries.

    Four men, aged 21, 26, 33 and 35, arrested in connection with Mr Fretwell’s death, remain on bail pending further enquiries.

    Police have released details of a violent robbery in which a man was stabbed in the leg.

    It happened just before Christmas last year in the Cowersley area of Hudderfield when the man went outside his house and was approached by four men wearing balaclavas. 

    They pushed him back inside his house and began to search for cash. One of them took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the victim in the leg.

    Friends of the victim arrived at the house, the men left and the man's friends locked the doors, however the men forced their way back in and stole a safe.

    The three Rotherham MPs who were libeled by a UKIP MEP say they don't expect to see any of the £162,000 damages she's been ordered to pay them. 

    Jane Collins falsely claimed that Sir Kevin Barron, John Healey and Sarah Champion knew about the Rotherham child sex abuse scandal and refused to intervene. 

    She's now facing a bill of almost £350,000 in fines and costs. 

    Jane Collins says new evidence has come to light and  that she will take this to the Court of Appeal.

    News of the tree protestors, arrested yesterday by police on Chippinghouse Road in Sheffield. 

    Green Party councillor for Nether Edge and Sharrow, Alison Teal, told BBC Radio Sheffield  that she and six others have now been charged over the stand-off.  South Yorkshire Police have confirmed seven people have been charged under section 241 of Trade Union Legislation.

    The group was was taken away by police yesterday morning after they refused to move from the base of a horse chestnut earmarked for felling. The tree was later chopped down.
