  1. E-fit appeal over attempted kidnapping in Halifaxpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 6 April 2018

    The man pictured in the e-fit image below is being sought by police after he tried to bundle a woman into the back of a van in Halifax.

    Officers say the 33-year-old woman was walking through the town centre in January towards a bus stop on Commercial Street when a man started talking to her.

    He then assaulted her and tried to pull her into a van, but she shouted for help and the man ran off.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're treating it "extremely seriously" and that they have already carried out a "significant amount of work" to trace the man using CCTV.

    The man had a Yorkshire accent and was also wearing a dark blue hooded top with dark trousers.

    It's been revealed that Books of Remembrance, which were slashed with knives and scattered around the grounds of a Leeds crematorium are going through a painstaking restoration.

    The attack happened over the weekend at the Lawnswood Crematorium and appears to have been targeted, with the door being forced open to the room where they were kept, and locked cabinets being broken into.

    Leeds City Council says the damaged books have been taken to a professional restorer who will "systematically" work through each damaged page and then they will be rewritten in exactly the same style and format.

    CCTV is now being reviewed to track down the people who did it, the books that were vandalised were contained to the months of April, May and June only.

    The North Yorkshire Moors Railway says it's had lots of people supporting the decision to no longer have people dressing as German soldiers at a World War re-enactment weekend.

    The 'Railway in Wartime' event has taken place for the past 12 years.

    The charity's station at Levisham is transformed into a German occupied town.

    The railway says after negative publicity it has withdrawn its invitation to people to appear in German military outfits.

    A rapid response ambulance has had to be taken off the road after it was vandalised in Leeds yesterday.

    One of the car’s windows was smashed with a brick as the paramedic was treating a patient in the Burmantofts area.

    Stephen Segasby from Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “We are shocked and very disappointed by this act of vandalism."

    "Our dedicated staff work extremely hard to deliver the best possible service and for them to be targeted in this way is appalling."

    Hull Trains has tweeted that its 19.11 train service from Hull to London King's Cross has been cancelled.

    Delays, queueing traffic and the road is partially blocked due to accident on A59 Skipton Road in both directions between Meagill Lane and Parkinson's Lane with congestion on the A59 to Hardisty Hill and on A59 Skipton Road to B6451.

    The road has reopened with a running contraflow in the last few minutes.

    The accident is just east of Blubberhouses near to The Hopper Lane Hotel.

    The fire service says crews are attending an incident in Harrogate where an individual is trapped in a trench in the road on Rossett Green Lane.

    They received a call just before 09:00.

    Crews from Harrogate Tadcaster and Knaresborough are at the scene along with specialist teams from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance teams.

    The incident involves a trench which has collapsed trapping one person under clay and tarmac.

    Crews remain on the scene due to the complex nature of the rescue and agencies are working to together to free the individual.

    James, who's from York, had a shock win yesterday by taking gold in the 200m breaststroke.

    It's a gold medal for North Yorkshire's very own Charlie Tanfield.

    The racing cyclist from Great Ayton beat Scotland's John Archibald, who took silver, in the men's 4000m individual pursuit.

    Tanfield, an amateur looking to break into Great Britain's elite programme, won in a time of four minutes 15.952 seconds, beating Archibald by 0.704 seconds.

    Earlier, both riders had broken the Commonwealth Games record in a blistering qualifying session which saw five riders go under the previous mark, with Tanfield lowering the bar to 04:11.455.

  16. Six-mile oil spill on West Yorkshire riverpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 6 April 2018

    More than six miles of the River Aire have been polluted by an oil spill, according to the Environment Agency.

    The agency believes the oil got into the river yesterday morning at Wykebeck, in south east Leeds, and now stretches as far as Castleford.

    So far, there have been no reports of impact to wildlife or fish - and places like Fairburn Ings RSPB reserve have been notified about the spill.

    Mark West, from the agency, says: "We’re asking homeowners and particularly businesses who use diesel or oil to check their storage for leaks and report any significant spillages."

    Police are searching for vandals who destroyed plants and miniature trees which were part of Malton in Bloom.

    Officers say the damage, at the war memorial on York Road (pictured before the vandalism), was caused between Wednesday night and Thursday.

    The planters on the bridge on Railway Street were also damaged.

    Anyone with information about what happened, or who witnessed the damage being done, is being asked to contact police.

  18. Search for witness to fight which put six in hospitalpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 6 April 2018

    Police in Bradford want to speak to this man after he may have witnessed a fight in which six people were injured, one of whom is still in hospital.

    Seven men have been arrested in connection with the disturbance, which happened on Monday outside the Railway Club on Wakefield Road.

    The arrested men are aged between 20 and 32 and have since been bailed pending further enquiries.

    The man who is still in hospital isn't thought to have life-threatening injuries.

  19. 'Beast of Wombwell' suffered heart attack - Coronerpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 6 April 2018

    An inquest has heard that the child killer dubbed the "Beast of Wombwell" died after suffering a heart attack at a secure psychiatric unit.

    Peter Pickering, 80, died in hospital just days after being found guilty of raping an 18-year-old girl in West Yorkshire in 1972.

    Pickering had already spent 45-years in prison after killing 14-year-old Shirley Boldy in Barnsley in the same year.

    The inquest, held at Reading Town Hall, heard that Pickering died at Thornford Park Hospital after suffering a heart attack on 25 March.

    Senior coroner for Berkshire, Peter Bedford, said: "He was reviewed by a doctor in the hospital, who asked for a urine sample, and he was left alone for no more than five minutes before a nurse returned to find Mr Pickering collapsed on the floor, clearly in pain.

    "An ambulance was called, but he sadly went into a cardiac arrest."

    Mr Bedford added that because Mr Pickering was a detained patient he was obliged to carry out a full inquest, which has been adjourned until 18 June.

  20. LISTEN: Harrogate Hospital 'struggling to fill posts'published at 10:57 British Summer Time 6 April 2018

    The chief of Harrogate Hospital has told BBC Radio York that the biggest risk they're facing at the moment is a shortage of staff.

    Dr Ros Tolcher says that around 5% of posts at the hospital are currently unfilled.

    She says they're doing all they can to fill those but it's difficult in a relatively expensive area such as Harrogate.
