Workers from Eboracum UK Ltd will also be able to stop cyclists riding on footpaths in York, as well as controlling traffic in certain circumstance.

Police granted "more power to tackle antisocial behaviour" to eight members of staff who work as street rangers in the city.

Supt Int Lindsey Robson said: "York is already a very safe place, and by granting street rangers selected powers we can keep the millions of people who visit the city centre every year even safer.”

The street rangers will be able to require someone to give their name and address for road traffic offences, assault or criminal damage, or if they believe they are acting in an anti-social manner

The option to delegate powers was first granted to police forces in 2002, although they do not include the power to make an arrest.

The powers, which will be reviewed after 12 months, were granted by the chief constable who was "satisfied that they will be used appropriately and proportionally".

Carl Nickson, managing director of Eboracum UK Ltd, said the new powers "further professionalises our partnership with the police".
