    Police are appealing for help to find a man after he failed to appear in court.

    North Yorkshire Police say John Patrick Collins, 44, is wanted after failing to appear at York Crown Court to answer charges of drink-driving, driving whilst disqualified and perverting the course of justice.

    They say despite numerous inquiries they can't find him.

    Mr Collins usually works on building sites around North Yorkshire and lives on local caravan sites.

    The North Yorkshire force wants anyone who has seen him or knows where he is to get in touch.

    An 87-year-old cyclist from York has died in hospital after being hit by a car, police say.

    The man was hit by a blue BMW as he was crossing the A1237 between the Copmanthorpe and Woodthorpe roundabouts on Saturday afternoon.

    The motorist, a 60-year-old man from York, was uninjured.

    North Yorkshire Police has appealed for witnesses to the collision to get in touch.

    A road closed after a water main burst in York will stay shut until the weekend.

    It's happened on Walmgate in the city centre yesterday morning.

    Yorkshire Water say the cause of the burst pipe has not been found yet.

    The incident appears to have left a number of cracks in the road surface and has caused damage to the pavement.

    A driver was caught travelling at 162mph on th M1 in South Yorkshire, the fastest speed recorded across the whole of the UK in 2018.

    According to figures obtained by road safety charity Brake, four of the ten fastest speeds recorded were measured on roads in Yorkshire, with one motorist caught driving 152mph in a 50mph zone on the M62.

    In total 2252 motorists were caught driving at speeds in excess of 100mph by West Yorkshire Police, up from 345 the previous year.

    Meanwhile, 19 motorists were caught driving at speeds in excess of 100mph by South Yorkshire Police last year and 156 in the area covered by Humberside Police.

    North Yorkshire Police did not respond to the charity's Freedom of Information request.

    Nationally, a total of 9,596 motorists were clocked doing over 100mph prompting Brake to call for anyone caught driving at this speed to be automatically banned.

    Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for Brake, said: “We have to make sure these dangerous, selfish drivers are taken off our roads."

    Pupils and staff at a North Yorkshire school at the centre of a hepatitis A outbreak are to be vaccinated against the illness after the number of cases in the Ripon area rose to 29.

    Of the 29 cases at least 20 have now been confirmed at Outwood Academy in Ripon, with seven further cases in the wider community, according to Public Health England (PHE).

    In a letter to staff and parents the school says: "PHE is continuing to investigate and monitor the ongoing outbreak of hepatitis A in Ripon.

    "In order to reduce the chance of further transmission it's been recommended that hepatitis A vaccinations are offered to all our pupils and staff ahead of the school holiday."

    A vaccination session will take place at Outwood Academy later today.

    The school says: "It’s important for everyone who is offered vaccination to take it up, for their individual protection and to try and prevent further spread of the infection."

    Hepatitis A is passed from person to person by eating food or drinking water containing the virus.

    Symptoms of the illness are similar to flu and include mild fever, joint and muscle pain.

    The vehicle was travelling on the southbound carriageway, but then crossed over and overturned onto the Northbound lane.

    One lane is closed and there's queueing traffic from A167 /DaltonLane (Topcliffe) to the B1448 Topcliffe Road.

    An 87-year-old cyclist from York has been airlifted to hospital with "multiple serious injuries," police say.

    Officers are appealing for witnesses after a collision involving a bright blue BMW travelling towards Clifton Moor on the A1237 and a cyclist who was crossing the road.

    It happened on Saturday at about 14:30 between the Copmanthorpe and Woodthorpe roundabouts.

    The man is described as being in a "potentially life threatening condition". The motorist was uninjured.

    The North Yorkshire force wants anyone who saw the accident or has dashcam footage to get in touch.

    Four young boys in North Yorkshire have been praised by police for handing in a "dangerous" knife they found.

    Police say the four boys, all aged approximately 11, had been in Thirsk town centre when they found a 3in (7.6cm) lock knife.

    They took it straight to the police station and handed it in.

    PC Lydia Dunn, said: “We are extremely impressed with the young males for doing the right thing.

    “The lads had a calm and mature approach despite their young age, safety of others was clearly important to them and they have potentially prevented harm to others."

    These are the latest pictures from a street in York which has been closed after a water main burst this morning.

    Yorkshire Water say “We were made aware of a large burst pipe in Walmgate in York earlier this morning and a team was sent to the site as quickly as possible.

    "We have isolated the burst and will continue to work on fixing the pipe.”

    The water which flooded the street earlier has now gone.

    It appears to have left two ruptures in the road surface and has caused damage to the pavement.

    Yorkshire Water say: “We have a technician on site now assessing the situation and we are working with police and fire services who are also on site and assisting with the incident.”

    Police in York are warning people water supplies in the area may be affected.

    A motorist has been arrested after a cyclist was killed in a crash with a car in York.

    The cyclist, a 29-year-old local man, died at the scene of the crash at 01:00 on Stockton Lane near Heworth, said North Yorkshire Police.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention, said the force.

    Police are asking for witnesses to the collision involving a black Toyota to get in touch.
