    Irish President Michael D Higgins says he learned of the death of Martin McGuinness with "great sadness" and added that "people across this island will miss the leadership he gave".

    Former Northern Ireland secretary Lord Hain said Mr McGuinness had been "absolutely crucial" to the peace process. 

    "He had the grassroots credibility of a republican leader and former IRA commander, that could enable him, along with Gerry Adams, to take his followers, to take republicans, from the past of terror and horror into a democratic future, which is what he did."

    "Sometimes in the history of conflicts - and, goodness me, the island of Ireland has been involved in centuries of conflict with Britain - you need leaders who can rise above their past and, at that point, Martin McGuinness certainly stood the test and proved to be an indispensable figure." 

    Lord Hain, a former Labour cabinet minister, also revealed that Mr McGuinness - a "hardline republican" - had an unlikely love of the England cricket team, and knew all the players during one Ashes series.

    Victims' campaigner Alan McBride - whose wife was killed in an IRA bomb on Belfast's Shankill Road - says Northern Ireland "owes a debt of gratitude" to Martin McGuinness.

    Mr McBride told BBC Radio Ulster that his "fingerprints are all over the Troubles but they are also all over the peace process".  He added that although he did not support violence, McMcGuinness had shown "courage and leadership" during the peace process and his death will be a "huge loss".

    It appears that Martin McGuinness died around midnight in Altnagelvin Hospital with his family gathered around his bedside. We know he had been being treated for a serious illness in hospital for several weeks.

    When he gave his final interviews recently he told me that he believed this was a battle that he could win. Certainly, it has progressed more quickly than both Martin McGuinness and his family would have feared and he has now passed away.

    Colin Parry, whose 12-year-old son, Tim, died after being caught up in a double-bombing in Warrington town centre in 1993, tells BBC's Breakfast: "I don't forgive Martin."

    "I don't forgive the IRA, nor does my wife, nor do my children. But, setting aside forgiveness, the simple fact is I found Martin McGuinness an easy and pleasant man to talk to - a man who I believe was sincere in his desire for peace, for maintaining the peace process at all costs."
