    The news of Martin McGuinness' death emerged at about 6am on Tuesday morning - he died in Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry, during the night surrounded by his family.

    It is understood he had been suffering from a rare heart condition. Mr McGuinness stood down as deputy first minister in January in protest against the DUP's handling of an energy scandal , a move that triggered a snap election.
