    Theresa May and Leo Varadkar spoke today by phone and the prime minister offered sympathies for the loss of life caused by the storm.

    All schools in Northern Ireland will remain closed on Tuesday, the Department of Education has advised.

    It follows advice from the Met Office on the prolonged nature and potential severity of the storm.

    The man was in a car that was struck by a falling tree at Ravensdale, County Louth shortly before 15:00 local time.

    The head of the Northern Ireland civil service, David Sterling, chaired a meeting of the civil contingencies group at Stormont to assess how best to deliver public services while Northern Ireland is being hit by storm Ophelia.
