    It’s a damp start to Sunday as worshippers make their way to Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Pope Francis is to say Mass in front of a congregation of up to 500,000.

    The streets that snake along the Liffey quays remain closed to traffic, but those on foot are making a 5km pilgrimage from O’Connell Street to the gates of Phoenix Park.

    Amid all the noise and bustle, there were moments of intense silence.

    As the Pope prayed inside Knock Basilica, the crowd was hushed in prayer too.

    And when he spoke, they listened intently.

    As he talked about clerical abuse and the children who were "robbed of their innocence" and "left scarred by painful memories", there was quiet.

    Then, as he begged for forgiveness for this "open wound" and for the sins of scandal and betrayal, the crowd broke out into applause - agreeing with him

    His time seemed very short at Knock.

    Crowds got up close to Pope Francis - children on parents' shoulders; old people in wheelchairs, people in plastic ponchos and hats and mountain gear - captured by his warmth.

    But those who had made the journey said it was worth it, despite the misery of the rain.

    "We're here because we're Catholic and we're proud of it," said one woman.

    Following the Pope's presentation of a golden rosary to Knock Shrine, priests from the basilica return the gesture by presenting him with a mosaic of the apparition of Mary that appeared at Knock in 1879.

    That's the last action of the Pope at Knock - with that he's back off to Ireland West Airport where he'll fly back to Dublin for this afternoon's Mass in Phoenix Park.

    At Knock Shrine, the Pope again refers to clerical abuse, an issue that featured prominently in Dublin on Saturday.

    "None of us can fail to be moved by the stories of young people who suffered abuse, were robbed of their innocence and left scarred by painful memories," he says.

    "This open wound challenges us to be firm and decisive in the pursuit of truth and justice. I beg the Lord's forgiveness for these sins and for the scandal and betrayal felt by so many others in God's family.

    "I ask our Blessed Mother to intercede for the healing of the survivors and to confirm every member of our Christian family in the resolve never again to permit these situations to occur."

    He tells the crowd: "I know how important the tradition of the family rosary has been in this country.
