Welcoming the election of the party's first openly gay councillor, Alison Bennington, she added: "I think Alison has done very, very well and I think it's a positive thing and a great day for Alison.

"As Arlene Foster said, the DUP is not a church and we don't police in terms of people's private lives, so I absolutely welcome her election."

  4. Analysis: How are the parties doing?published at 10:45 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Jayne McCormack
    BBC News NI

Alliance had a stunning performance on Friday - they've managed to get seats across the board, breaking the trope that they've only ever had big support in the greater Belfast area.

The smaller parties - the Greens and People Before Profit - saw success too, and will be pleased at their growth in representation.

It looks like the DUP and Sinn Féin will make gains - there are some stronghold areas they'll hope to consolidate their vote in as well.

    Election

Sinn Féin will be aiming for wins with such candidates as Barry McElduff, who is set to make a comeback in Omagh.

As for the Ulster Unionists, their struggle may continue. There are big question marks over some of their long-standing Belfast seats.

  5. Barry McElduff hoping to take council seatpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 4 May 2019

    Fermanagh and Omagh District Council

The former MP for West Tyrone, Barry McElduff, has arrived at the count centre.

He resigned as a result of controversy over a Twitter video.

The then Sinn Féin MP had posted a video of himself in a shop with a loaf of Kingsmill bread on his head.
