  7. German press reactionpublished at 16:16

    BBC Monitoring

Jeremy Corbyn's win is widely reported in the German press. The leftwing Tageszeitung, external sees him as the "rebel who has become leader... easily beating his rivals from the New Labour camp".

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's London correspondent Jochen Buchsteiner says , externalMr Corbyn's first gestures towards New Labour have been "conciliatory", but expects his party honeymoon to be brief. "Blocking him appears tempting to so many Labour politicians... and a disappointing performance in the Scottish, Welsh and - above all - London mayoral elections could prompt a leadership challenge as early as next May".

Stefanie Bolzen, London correspondent of Die Welt, is brutal. "A leftwing utopian, not fit for the real world", she says, external, likening him to "the other European leftwing pop-stars - Syriza in Greece and Podemos in Spain - onto whom people who want to jump off the train of rapidly-changing times project their hopes and dreams". She contrasts him unfavourably with Germany's own Social Democrat leader, vice-chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, who has had to "painfully balance aspirations with reality".

  8. Corbyn on nuclear weaponspublished at 16:12

Jeremy Corbyn has been speaking to Channel 4 News about Britain's nuclear weapons. He said:

    Quote Message

My views on Trident are very well known. There has to be a discussion about that and I'm hoping the party will come together around this issue. We don't need nuclear weapons. We need to keep those people who make them in good jobs... but we need to fulfill our obligations under the nuclear proliferation treaty."

    Quote Message

My job is going to be a complicated one...a campaigning one, uniting, I hope, people in a common endeavour to bring about the decent socially just society we want... challenging the idea austerity, caused by a banking failure, should be paid for by the poorest and most vulnerable in our society."

An hour or so ago, Jeremy Corbyn held a victory rally in a London pub. Here's a recap on what he told his jubilant supporters. The new Labour leader said his campaign had united people from diverse backgrounds who wanted "a society based on socialist values". And he called on his party to "stay together for that genius of hope and optimism that can bring about fantastic changes which will improve the lives of everyone in this society".

  13. 'Rambling' Corbynpublished at 15:43

Over at CapX, Conservative commentator Iain Martin reflects on Jeremy Corbyn's victory, external and concludes Labour "may have had it" - and that the bubbles will be flowing in Conservative quarters. He's also distinctly unimpressed with Mr Corbyn's acceptance speech:

    Quote Message

He rambled around thanking people and then shouted a lot like an intolerant sociology lecturer at a bar who has just been introduced to someone who might be a Tory. He had several cracks at the media – fine, if that’s your thing – but again the look was not that of a prime minister in-waiting

Jeremy Corbyn says there is a "popular uprising in favour of decency and humanity in our society". He calls on the government to "recognise your obligations in law" and "open your hearts, minds and attitudes" towards supporting people in need of help. A rendition of the socialist anthem the Red Flag follows, courtesy of Billy Bragg, not the first time we have heard that today.

  18. Corbyn addresses refugee rallypublished at 15:33

Jeremy Corbyn addressing rally in Parliament Square

Jeremy Corbyn has just arrived on stage at a rally in central London supporting the rights of refugees. The new Labour leader says he supports refugees and the right to asylum "because we are all humans" with a sense of "decency and humanity".

He adds: "I am shocked beyond appalled at the way so many and so much of our media for so long endlessly described desperate people in desperate situations as the problem." He says they are victims of war, environmental degradation, poverty and human rights abuses all over the world and the UK has a responsibility under international law to ensure they are "properly cared for and supported".

    Quote Message

Surely our objective ought to be to find peaceful solutions to the problems of this world. To spend our resources on helping not hindering people and to try to bring about that world of decency, human rights and justice."

  20. 'Depressing' lack of womenpublished at 15:22

    BBC News Channel

Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee says it has been an "astonishing victory" for Jeremy Corbyn. But she laments the absence of any women in Labour's top roles (with the deputy leadership and London mayoral positions both being held by men). She says it's "a terrible blindspot" for Labour not to have created a system requiring a women to hold one of the top jobs. "It really looked like a throwback to yesteryear. It was a depressing day from that point of view," she tells the BBC. She also suggests Angela Eagle would be a good choice as shadow chancellor, describing her as an "extremely level-headed and clever" politician.
