  2. Warm words for Liz Kendallpublished at 15:18

"One of the most significant moments in Jeremy Corbyn's speech was the place where he offered warm words for Liz Kendall.

In all honesty, he could afford to be magnanimous towards the only avowedly Blairite candidate. Her defeat was all but total. It's not much remarked upon, but her achievement in getting under 17% of Labour MPs to support her did not bode well for her chances.

It ended that she got just 4.5% of the vote, well below even the total that the pollsters were predicting."

From left to right: Tom Watson and Jeremy Corbyn embrace after the resultImage source, PA

Writing for the Guardian, Suzanne Moore notes that Labour's new top team is all male - and she's not impressed.

    Quote Message

The new brocialism cares deeply about women’s issues of course – just not enough to elect an actual woman. They don’t need to, because good lefties speak for all us. They don’t even notice gender. This can be the only explanation for that gobsmacking meeting today in which Jeremy Corbyn was anointed leader and not one woman’s voice was heard. Not even in that retro “Here’s my lovely assistant” way. No woman announced anything. Men announced the result – Iain McNicol, Labour’s general secretary, and Jim Kennedy, chair of Labour’s national executive committee – and that result was that men had won."

    BBC Newsnight

In the coming days, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will address the TUC conference, assemble and announce a shadow cabinet and address a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party - a meeting he previously made a habit of avoiding in his 32 years as an MP.

Then comes Prime Minister’s Questions and a clash between two leaders who could not be more divided in their politics, their style or their rhetoric.

  13. View from France: Strong mandatepublished at 14:43

    BBC Monitoring

Some French papers are focusing on Jeremy Corbyn's strong mandate. "Jeremy Corbyn garners more than Blair did to win Labour leadership vote," declares Liberation. Centre-right Le Figaro describes it as "Massive Labour Party leadership victory for radical Jeremy Corbyn".

Others carry more neutral headlines but stress Mr Corbyn's left-wing credentials. Les Echos economic daily writes: "Jeremy Corbyn new leader of Britain's Labour Party", while L'Express says: "Great Britain: 'Leftist' Jeremy Corbyn elected to head the Labour Party."

    Jeremy Corbyn

Speaking to the BBC a short while ago, Jeremy Corbyn says today is "a fantastic moment, a fantastic mandate for change", adding: "It's a great day." He admits he was "a bit surprised" at how big his winning margin was, before recalling some of the "magic moments" of his campaign. Asked what he makes of the several shadow cabinet resignations since his victory, he pledges that there'll be an "inclusive open process" and hoped everyone would recognise his mandate.
