    The government has just won the first Commons vote on its controversial trade union reform plans by 33 votes. The Trade Union Bill, which would impose a minimum 50% turnout in strike ballots and double the amount of notice unions have to give before a strike can be held to 14 days was backed at second reading by 317 votes to 284. It will now proceed to further detailed scrutiny.

    The Guardian’s headline says Mr Corbyn made his first moves to rally his parliamentary party but faced a grilling from shellshocked Labour MPs after a day of policy confusion and a sometimes. It said the chaotic shadow cabinet reshuffle revealed the lengths the new leader had to go to get the parliamentary party behind him.

    Metro reports claims broadcast on Sky News and the BBC that Jeremy Corbyn's new right-hand woman was picked as an afterthought to stop criticism over top jobs going to white men. The Labour leader made Angela Eagle shadow first secretary of state - a role usually filled by the shadow chancellor - after urging by an aide, it says.

    We are beginning to get the first of tomorrow's front pages, many of which are dominated by Jeremy Corbyn and tensions in the party surrounding his shadow cabinet team and his stance on key issues. The Financial Times, external says the new Labour leader faced a day of confusion and acrimony as he tried to pacify anxious Labour MPs over his appointment of John McDonnell as shadow chancellor and as rifts opened up over party policy on Europe.

    Labour aide tells me Jeremy Corbyn will wear a red poppy and not a white one at the Cenotaph. 

    Earlier he gave an ambiguous answer to Labour MPs at the PLP meeting when asked about poppies. He has previously worn both a red and white poppy to remembrance events.

    BBC political correspondent Ross Hawkins says, according to an aide, Mr Corbyn declined to repeat his shadow foreign secretary's assurance Labour will campaign for Britain to stay in the EU during the PLP meeting. 

    Instead he said Labour should not give David Cameron a blank cheque when he returns from EU negotiations.

    Joe Twyman, of YouGov, says Jeremy Corbyn won the Labour leadership race because he was "something new and different".

    Of the other candidates, three were in their forties, "three people who were former special advisers, former Oxbridge, effectively former career politicians.

    "Jeremy Corbyn has been in the Commons for 30 years but he was different, he represented change. So he was popular among not just the new £3 sign-ups, but all different groups."

    The Parliamentary Labour Party meeting has now concluded, and the BBC's Vicki Young says there was "absolute silence" when new leader Jeremy Corbyn entered the room.

    She adds: "There's no doubt that he had a pretty hard time in there. I don't think it was particularly hostile or aggressive. Nevertheless, it clearly shows deep unease amongst many of the people in that room, most of whom do not support him and his vision."

    On the subject of his somewhat rebellious record in the party, Mr McDonnell says: "In this place, I've had to oppose a lots of things and that's meant swimming against the stream.

    "It's meant Jeremy and I have been isolated," in the past, he goes on, but "now we've been proven right", for example, on issues like Iraq.

    On the EU - and whether his new Labour Party will campaign to stay in - he says he and Mr Corbyn want to remain in the EU, but they have "own our reform agenda" for changing it.

    New shadow chancellor John McDonnell has been speaking to Channel 4 News. He laughs off suggestions that "fomenting the overthrow of capitalism" is one of his hobbies. But he says capitalism "isn't working" and insists it is the job of a chancellor to try to change something as fundamental as that.

    He says he's concerned about organisations "literally laughing their way to the bank" and getting away without paying their fair share in taxes.
