  7. Monday recappublished at 18:11

It's been a day largely dominated by Labour Party developments so far, as new leader Jeremy Corbyn unveiled his full shadow cabinet team. Mr Corbyn says it's a "unifying group" but his decision to appoint left-wing ally John McDonnell as shadow chancellor has ruffled some feathers in the party. As BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg notes, it's a "big risk" for the new leader.

Mr Corbyn has also come in for criticism for not selecting any women for the top jobs, with the foreign and home affairs briefs also going to men. But half of the total posts have gone to women, including shadow defence, education, business and health.

Want to learn more about the new appointees? Here's a guide to who's who in Corbyn's new cabinet

    In other politics news:

  8. Who's who in Corbyn's cabinet?published at 17.50

    Lilian Greenwood

Shadow transport secretary Lilian Greenwood: The Nottingham South MP has represented the seat since 2010. She has been promoted from shadow rail minister under Ed Miliband's leadership.

Policy focus: Ms Greenwood has been a strong critic, external of the government's rail policy, and now has a more prominent platform from which to push for reform. During the leadership campaign, Mr Corbyn said he would consider women-only rail carriages to help stem a rise in assaults on public transport. He also wants to renationalise Britain's railway network and is opposed to the HS2 scheme linking London with the north of England.

  9. Who's who in Corbyn's cabinet?published at 17:46

    Kerry McCarthy

Shadow environment secretary Kerry McCarthy: The Bristol East MP, first elected in 2005, has previously shadowed positions in the Foreign Office, Treasury and Department for Work and Pensions. She is also a vegan and campaigns on food issues.

Policy focus: Ms McCarthy is likely to use her new position to pressure the government on the badger cull, of which she has been a fierce critic. She will be liaising with the farming sector for the Labour Party, and has spoken out against the environmental impact of meat production as well as saying , externalthe meat, dairy and egg industries "cause immense suffering to more than a billion animals every year in the UK alone".

  10. Who's who in Corbyn's cabinet?published at 17:42

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has unveiled his shadow cabinet team. Here's a look at some of the perhaps less well-known individuals joining the shadow cabinet ranks.

    Heidi Alexander

Shadow health secretary Heidi Alexander: A former party whip under Ed Miliband's leadership, the MP for Lewisham East may be unknown to many outside Westminster. She has previously campaigned against the closure of Lewisham Hospital's A&E department. Speaking after her appointment she told the BBC a "very very limited role" for the private sector in the NHS could be a good thing.

  12. Powell on economic credibilitypublished at 17:33

    BBC Radio 4

    Lucy Powell

More from Lucy Powell, who was Ed Miliband's campaign manager at the general election. She says Labour didn't win in May because it lacked economic credibility. She says the public liked a lot of Labour's policies but weren't convinced the party would be able to afford them. So does she think Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell can convince where he didn't? "Not on everything, no. Not at all," she replies.

Ms Powell says she doesn't agree with all of their economic policies - but supports their call to "live within our means and eliminate the deficit" but in a way that doesn't put at risk education, health or infrastructure investment.

    Quote Message

I look forward to being part of that discussion around the shadow cabinet table and making my views known."

  13. Powell: Corbyn relaxed about differencespublished at 17:25

    BBC Radio 4

The new shadow education secretary, Lucy Powell, tells BBC Radio 4's PM programme she still hasn't met Jeremy Corbyn - but they have spoken on the phone. She'll see him in person for the first time at the meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party this evening, she adds.

Ms Powell is asked whether the shadow ministers have been promised a free vote on key issues where there is disagreement, such as Nato and the EU. There'll largely be "a consensual approach to some of these issues", Ms Powell says, adding that Mr Corbyn has said he's "relaxed" about some of those differences "and that we will work these things through".

She says it was a difficult decision for her on whether to accept the job, but she felt she could "advance the causes" she cares about better from within the shadow cabinet.

  14. 'Winning back voters'published at 17:24

    BBC News Channel

From left to right: Jon Ashworth and Toby Perkins

Jon Ashworth, shadow minister without portfolio, has been speaking to the BBC about his appointment. He says he understands it’ll involve campaigning - similar to what he did under Ed Miliband. Labour needs to win back voters “and that’s what I’m going to be doing”, he adds.

Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, says Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign has been a big success. But the real test now is whether that "sense of excitement and enthusiasm" in the movement can be extrapolated to the wider country, he adds: “That’s a role for all of us.”

  15. MP seeks bill amendmentpublished at 17:03

    House of Commons
    Parliament

More from Conservative MP Alec Shelbrooke. He asks the government to reconsider proposals in the bill allowing private sector companies to employ agency workers during strikes.

    Quote Message

There are key differences between the services provided by the private and public sector and this should be recognised in the bill."

  18. 'Cash cow for misguided Marxists'published at 16:57

    House of Commons
    Parliament

    Alec Shelbrooke

Alec Shelbrooke is the first backbencher to speak in the Trade Union Bill debate - and he does so in support of the bill. The Elmet and Rothwell MP tells MPs he was a "founding member" of Unite union, "by virtue of my MSF union merging to become Amicus and then Unite". But he resigned up when he realised it had become "the financial cash cow for misguided Marxists at the top to play with their members' lives for their own fun and political games".

He says this bill will protect "hard-working people".
