Shadow Scottish secretary Ian Murray says he is backing Jeremy Corbyn who has an "overwhelming mandate". He also says he supports the decision to make Mr McDonnell shadow chancellor. Quote Message

I'm going to try and make sure we can convince our colleagues in Parliament on the need for change - and that's from all political parties not just the parliamentary Labour Party, but also convince the public as well."

  7. PM press conference in Lebanonpublished at 09:15

    David Cameron

Prime Minister David Cameron is holding a news conference in Lebanon, where he has been visiting refugee camps. He pays tribute to the "immense generosity" of the Lebanese people in helping Syrian refugees.

    Quote Message

I recognise that the humanitarian crisis in Syria is putting huge pressure on your country, on public services, schools and housing. That is why the UK has provided about £300m in assistance for Lebanon since the crisis began... and we will ensure that £29m of our latest £100m commitment is spent right here in Lebanon helping further to shoulder the burden."

Stressing the importance of education, he announces the UK will double its commitment to £20m a year for the next three years to help Syrian children in public schools so they can "get the education they deserve". He finished by saying it has been an "important visit".

  10. Union reforms on agendapublished at 09:01

Demonstrators protest against spending cutsImage source, EPA

In other - not entirely unrelated news - plans to tighten rules on trade union strike ballots in Britain are to be debated in Parliament for the first time later - amid warnings of industrial and legal action.

The government's Trade Union Bill proposes curbs on picketing and higher voting thresholds for ballots - but unions say it's a threat to workers' right to strike, with leaders vowing to fight it "tooth and nail".

Business Secretary Sajid Javid said it will stop "endless" threats of action.

  11. Labour MP: Corbyn 'has done the right thing'published at 08:55

    BBC Breakfast

    Emily Thornberry

Former Labour front-bencher Emily Thornberry - of "flag-gate" fame, has defended Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet, saying he has put women into two of the top jobs. She told the BBC the education and health secretary positions, given to Lucy Powell and Heidi Alexander, respectively, were two of the most important positions on the front bench.

Ms Thornberry said she "hadn't had a call" from the new leader about a job but would serve if asked.

    Quote Message

Jeremy has done exactly the right thing which is to reach out into the Parliamentary Labour Party and take people from all wings. It is absolutely within his character - he's collective, he does work with other people, he listens to other people. He's not the factional politician that lots of people were worried that he might be."

Ms Thornberry also suggested the money earmarked for the renewal of Trident would be better spent on public services, homes or the Army.

  12. Corbyn takes big risk with McDonnellpublished at 08:45

    John McDonnellImage source, PA

Jeremy Corbyn said he would unite the party. Two days in he has two big problems - a lack of women in the top jobs, having promised a new equality, but a bigger one perhaps, his choice as shadow chancellor. The appointment of John McDonnell is a risk, a big risk.

I understand that Jeremy Corbyn was warned by members of his own camp not to give the crucial role of shadow chancellor to his close friend and campaign manager, John McDonnell.

There were concerns over how his appointment would appear and the impact it would have on the rest of the shadow team.

  17. Benn: It's a big changepublished at 08:32

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

    Hilary BennImage source, PA

Looking to the future under the new Labour leader, is Hilary Benn worried that it will "blow up in Labour's face"? He concedes it's a "big change" and one that will "take all of us time to come to terms". But he says Labour's job is to be an "effective opposition" and to support the leader.

  18. Enough women?published at 08:28

There has been criticism of Jeremy Corbyn for not giving any of the top shadow cabinet positions to women. Asked about this, Hilary Benn says "it depends on your definition of the top job" - saying briefs such as international development and education, which have been given to Diane Abbott and Lucy Powell, are "vital". The shadow foreign secretary adds that Mr Corbyn is committed to a 50/50 gender split in his shadow cabinet team.

    Quote Message

That will have never happened before and I regard that as a step forward."

  19. Benn on the EUpublished at 08:22

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Pressed over Jeremy Corbyn's position on Europe, Hilary Benn says the Labour leader wants to stay in Europe, but wants to see it work better. Labour will campaign to remain in the European Union, he says. "Our policy has not changed," he adds. He says he cannot answer for Chuka Umunna when asked about the former business spokesman's suggestion he would not serve in Corbyn's team because of differences over the EU - suggesting the new Labour leader would not rule out supporting a UK exit from the EU.

  20. Benn: Labour must win back trust on the economypublished at 08:20

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Hilary Benn, who remains as shadow foreign secretary in the new shadow cabinet, says he respects the choices Jeremy Corbyn has made.  Labour's main task is to win people's trust on the economy, as that is what lost the party the general election, he tells the Today programme. He says the party will be united in opposition to planned welfare reforms, including tax credit cuts, which will be debated by MPs on Tuesday. "There is clearly room for an alternative view on the economy," Mr Benn adds. Pressed further on his views on Mr McDonnell's appointment, he says he "welcomes everyone" who is serving in the shadow cabinet.
