We hope that MPs charged with the weighty responsibility of making laws, will want to hear evidence directly from sex workers, the experts on the ground, as well as from academics and other experts."

Laura Watson, English Collective of Prostitutes

Sex workers from 10 countries including South Africa, Scotland and the UK are giving evidence in favour of decriminalising prostitution in the UK.

Academics and representatives from organisations such as Sex Workers Alliance Ireland will also attend the event where issues such as the safety and health of sex workers and the impact of policing will be discussed.

The symposium was originally suggested by John McDonnell, who is now shadow chancellor.

  13. Nigel Farage: We'll give by-election our best shotpublished at 11:22

Nigel Farage says he feels the UKIP vote is "solid" and that the party can target a large chunk of the Conservative vote and also do well among traditional Labour voters who, he says, are "pretty appalled" by Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

The UKIP leader says he's delighted Mr Bickley is contesting the seat, saying he connects with ordinary voters and speaks their language. He says he's not saying UKIP will win it "but we will give it our best shot ... and we might just get over the line".

    John Bickley

John Bickley, who almost unseated Labour in a by-election in the neighbouring Heywood and Middleton constituency, pays tribute to Michael Meacher. He says he'll give the race 100%, adding: "I think we can win this."

  14. UKIP announce Oldham by-election candidatepublished at 11:09

L-R John Bickley and Nigel Farage

John Bickley has been announced as UKIP's candidate to fight the Oldham West and Royton by-election. The contest, on 3 December, is being held following the death of Labour MP Michael Meacher, who represented the area since 1970.

Announcing the news at a pub in Oldham, UKIP leader Nigel Farage says some have said it would have been better for Labour to have moved the writ after Mr Meacher's funeral, "but here we are".

He says his life over the past few months has been "pretty empty" as there's been no election campaigns to fight, but he's "raring to go" for this one.

  15. John Baron: Syria air strikes not solution to defeating ISpublished at 11:00

    Victoria Derbyshire

    John Baron

MP John Baron - who led the Conservative rebellion in the 2013 Commons vote on military action in Syria - says most military experts accept that air strikes alone will not defeat so-called Islamic State.

"What is needed is fresh thinking instead of just more force," the Foreign Affairs Committee chairman argues, saying the UK must learn from the "mistakes" of Iraq and Afghanistan.

He also questions "the logic" of air strikes against IS in Iraq, which the UK is currently involved in.

He says a diplomatic and political situation is needed, but predicts "it could take a little while".

  20. Row over new UK passportpublished at 10:35

    BBC Home Affairs Correspondent

The Home Office has unveiled the new UK passport - but a row is brewing because it features images of only two women out of nine cultural icons.

The new passport, which officials say is the most secure ever produced, is intended to celebrate 500 years of creativity in the UK.

It contains images of John Harrison, John Constable, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Charles Babbage & William Shakespeare. But only two women are represented - architect Elisabeth Scott and mathematician and writer Ada Lovelace.

The director general of HM Passport Office, Mark Thomson, said the icons were chosen by a panel of printers and designers and signed off by ministers. He said it was a "good representation". "There's always someone who wants their favourite rock band or icon in the book," he said.

Mr Thomson said the new passport, which will be rolled out from next month, was "the most secure in the world" with a number of new security features to thwart fraudsters and forgeries.
