  2. Warrant system 'not open to abuse'published at 10:30

    Jack Straw

Asked whether he's happy with the oversight of warrants required to look at person's web browsing history, Jack Straw says there's a debate to be had about "what's appropriate for the future" and he will wait to see what Home Secretary Theresa May is proposing.

But he insists there are "huge safeguards" in the current system, so that any warrant agreed is done so in "very controlled circumstances" and subject to "retrospective judicial scrutiny". "It is not open to abuse and it is judicially supervised," he adds.

  3. Jack Straw: New surveillance legislation is necessarypublished at 10:28

    Victoria Derbyshire

Proposed new web surveillance powers are to be published by the government on Wednesday.

Former Labour Home Secretary Jack Straw, who was responsible for the current legislation that dictates how police and security services access internet communications, says new legislation is needed because of the internet age.

    Quote Message

The current legislation... was analogue legislation. This was in 1999 when the internet was in its absolute infancy."

The world today "has completely changed", he tells the programme.

  6. 'I give up' on Labour, says ex-ministerpublished at 09:50

Former Labour minister Tom Harris says he has given up on the Labour Party after shadow minister Catherine West told "Stop the War"  at a meeting last night that Labour would consult them about its response to any Syria air strike proposal.

    Quote Message

So that's it. Labour has jumped the shark. It has gone from 'a bit bonkers' to 'irredeemable' in the space of a single day. And I give up. That's it for me. Giving. Up. Goodbye."

But does that mean he's leaving the party? Apparently not.

  10. Ex-Labour minister: Inequality is 'scarring' the UKpublished at 09:16

The whole of the Labour Party needs to "respect" leader Jeremy Corbyn's mandate and his "mantra that the fight against inequality has now got to be centre stage", ex-Labour minister Liam Bryne has said.

Mr Byrne - a member of "Red Shift", external, a group of Labour MPs that published a "route map" for winning back voters in England - told Today it was not good enough to just "throw rocks" at ideas of Mr Corbyn "that we disagree" with.

    Quote Message

We have got to set out what unites us in the Labour Party - that's why I'm saying we need to rewrite Clause IV to put the fight against inequality centre stage, but where there are ideas that we differ with we've got to come up with better ideas."

Mr Byrne said he'd come up with a set of "creative and constructive" proposals to "rewrite the rules for our economy" to ensure that it "shares wealth".

He said there are more billionaires but the number of children in absolute poverty had increased. "That inequality is scarring our country."

  16. 'New approach needed' in Syria, says senior Torypublished at 08:35

John Baron, a Conservative member of the Foreign Affairs Committee which has just warned the government against air strikes in Syria, has told Today  the UK needs to come up with a more coherent policy on Syria.

"We just don't need the deployment of more force. We need fresh thinking as to the West's approach to this five-year civil war," he said. Mr Baron told Today the government had proposed military intervention "on both sides", and added:

    Quote Message

What the West now needs to do is focus its efforts in forging a regional alliance to combat the greater threat, which is [so-called Islamic State], even if this means dropping our opposition to [Syrian President] Assad in order to achieve this goal. Otherwise we risk displaying the same strategic deficit we demonstrated in our foreign policy mistakes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya."

  17. Lord Adonis: My focus is on infrastructurepublished at 08:31

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Asked about Labour politics, Lord Adonis explains that he has resigned the whip in order to chair the National Infrastructure Committee and not because of any issues with the party. He now sits as a crossbench peer in the House of Lords.

Is he impressed with leader Jeremy Corbyn's economic approach? Lord Adonis, declining to answer the question, says his focus is on "building consensus" behind UK infrastructure plans.

  18. Public sector 'must raise game' on house buildingpublished at 08:28

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Lord Adonis says the single biggest owner of land in London is the public sector. Transport for London, he adds, owns "6,000 acres". So "there's no shortage of land", he tells Today, and adds:

    Quote Message

A big challenge for public sector organisation is how they can raise their game significantly on house building."

  19. Where does the money come from?published at 08:25

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Should more money come from developers, rather than taxpayers? Lord Adonis says the former are making a contribution, but adds that a "balance" is needed. He says Crossrail will have a massive impact on generating new homes and jobs - and businesses are making "a significant contribution" to that project.

    Quote Message

We need to see again, as we look at other transport projects, how we get the contribution that enables the infrastructure to be put in place so that housing can be built up rapidly."

  20. Lord Adonis calls for better transport to generate housingpublished at 08:22

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

David Cameron has promised a "national crusade to get homes built". Lord Adonis, former Labour cabinet minister and chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission, says the UK needs to build up "more effective transport" to generate more housing, particularly in urban areas where demand is high.

Ebbsfleet garden city is an important case study, he says, as people expected rapid new development with the new high speed line "but infrastructure issues have proved very difficult to resolve".

He says Michael Cassidythe new chair of Ebbsfleet Development Corporation,   is "confident" he will get the homes built, Lord Adonis adds.
