  1. Wes Streeting: Not the way to do oppositionpublished at 16:22

    BBC News Channel

    Wes Streeting

Wes Streeting, Labour MP for Ilford North, has criticised the way the shadow cabinet reshuffle was handed: "The sad thing, entirely self-inflicted, is all the headlines are about personalities," he told the BBC. "This isn't the way we should be doing opposition.

"When Jeremy came in the emphasis was on open politics. It was disappointing that over the Christmas period there was aggressive briefing from the top of the party there was going to be a 'revenge reshuffle'. Instead we've had a complete shambles, and it's not the way we should be conducting opposition."

The three most senior executives at the Environment Agency have begun giving evidence to MPs about the flooding in the north of England and Scotland over Christmas and the New Year. Chief executive Sir James Bevan starts by saying the impact has been "heartbreaking" but the response of the affected communities and of his staff has been "inspiring". He says the UK faces a "big challenge" in dealing with an era of increasingly "extreme weather" and the country should pull together to cope with it.

In the first speech on the topic by a secretary of state since David Cameron announced ministers would be able to choose to campaign for an EU exit even if he backed the Uk staying in, Elizabeth Truss seems to signal she would line up behind the PM.

Addressing the Oxford Farming Conference, she said:

    Quote Message

I fully support the Prime Minister’s renegotiation of our relationship with the EU. I have seen how hard he is fighting to get a better deal for Britain. Of course it is difficult – negotiating with 27 countries will never be easy. But front and centre of our mind is Britain’s economic and national security... There is a huge prize at stake and one worth fighting for. In the end, the British people will decide. Because we made a promise and kept it – to deliver an in-out referendum."

  8. GMB on Emily Thornberry appointmentpublished at 15:21

The GMB union, which supports the renewal of Trident, has congratulated Emily Thornberry on her appointment as Labour's new shadow defence secretary. Ms Thornberry, who is opposed to the renewal of the nuclear deterrent, replaced Maria Eagle in the party's reshuffle yesterday. In a statement, the GMB's general secretary elect, Tim Roache, said he looked forward to working with Ms Thornberry to protect jobs in the defence industries.

    Quote Message

GMB congratulates Emily on her appointment to the crucial role of shadow defence secretary in these difficult and uncertain times. I look forward to working with her on the GMB's primary objectives of protecting and maintaining the quality jobs of our members working in the defence industries and safeguarding their communities. These workers are vital to our national security. I feel sure that she too will share these objectives."

  9. John Woodcock 'losing hope' over Labour futurepublished at 15:19

    BBC News Channel

    Labour MP John Woodcock

Labour MP John Woodcock said of the shadow cabinet changes: "I'm losing hope that they will orient themselves towards being a credible force."

  10. Watch: Philip Hammond condemns North Korea 'hydrogen bomb test'published at 15:13

  12. Labour 'threat to national security', says defence secretarypublished at 15:12

Defence Secretary Michael FallonImage source, PA

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said the divisions within the Labour Party show the opposition would be a "threat to national security".

He said reports that North Korea had detonated a hydrogen bomb gave further reason not to hand power to the Labour Party which he claimed would "disarm Britain".

    Quote Message

This reshuffle shows that a divided Labour Party is a threat to national security. The Labour Party has a leader who would abolish the armed forces and withdraw from Nato, a shadow chancellor who wanted to disband MI5, and now a shadow defence secretary who would scrap our nuclear deterrent.

    Quote Message

North Korea's deeply disturbing claim to have exploded its first hydrogen bomb underlines the importance of taking our national security seriously, not handing it to a Labour Party that would unilaterally disarm Britain."

  13. Mandelson: Corbyn trying to strip away Britain's nuclear defencepublished at 14:53

Speaking to Newsweek, external, Lord Mandelson said:

    Quote Message

This reshuffle is about one thing: changing Labour policy in order to strip away Britain's nuclear defence and removing or intimidating those who would stand in the way of this.

  18. UKIP: Labour defence policies 'crackpot'published at 14:08

UKIP is having its say on Labour's reshuffle, claiming Emily Thornberry's appointment as shadow defence secretary has left the official opposition without any credibility. The party's defence spokesman, Mike Hookem, says Jeremy Corbyn is less concerned with ensuring the UK is properly protected than "sacking those who disagree with his crackpot defence policies and who blame western intervention for terrorism, simply to replace them with his socialist cronies". He adds:

    Quote Message

These changes to Labour’s front bench team prove that they are no longer credible on a wide range of issues, but especially on defence and defeating terrorism. They have now gagged any opposition to Corbyn. This leaves only UKIP as the only credible opposition to a government who continues to pour money away while our troops go wanting."

  19. Tom Watson: I wish Emily Thornberry wellpublished at 14:02
